A former White House stenographer who spent years working with Joe Biden warned that the Democratic presidential nominee is facing a mental decline.
Biden’s ability to speak in public is “a complete difference” as compared to 2017, according to Mike McCormick who spent 15 years as a White House stenographer. After working with the former vice president from 2011 to 2017, McCormick sees a very different man, telling the Washington Free Beacon that he’s “not the same Joe Biden.”
“It is a complete difference from what he was in 2017,” McCormick said in an interview published Tuesday.
“He’s lost a step and he doesn’t seem to have the same mental acuity as he did four years ago,” he said. “He doesn’t have the energy, he doesn’t have the pace of his speaking.”
McCormick noted that “he’s a different guy,” as Biden has come under increased scrutiny over his frequent gaffes and, more recently, his tired appearance and sometimes confused thinking during speeches and events.
McCormick has had a first-hand look at Biden’s alleged decline as he often traveled with the then-vice president and transcribed speeches, discussions and more for the official White House record. The former stenographer, who wrote a book published earlier this year that focuses on Biden’s alleged corruption in overseas business dealings, noted that the marked change can be seen in how Biden seems to always need a script to follow whereas he used to have no trouble connecting with people and often strayed from his pre-written speeches.
“He’d just make a big joke out of it, and go straight from the hip. And I notice, he’s not doing that anymore,” McCormick said. “He read that [Democratic National Committee speech] verbatim … it’s not Joe Biden anymore.”
He noted that, though Biden had a tendency to ramble even when in the White House, he now seems to get “lost” during interviews.
Biden appeared to have issues with his teleprompter during a virtual town hall on Monday, directing his staff to “move it up here” while breathing heavily before answering a question. He has come under fire repeatedly for appearing to be reading from notes or a teleprompter even during what are supposed to be impromptu questions, accidentally reading the words “topline message” in an interview last week, after saying “End of quote.”

Biden was also caught on camera a few months back directing staffers to change the teleprompter as he struggled during another talk while, at a rare in-person campaign stop speech in Pittsburgh last week, he again struggled to read off the teleprompter or string together a complete sentence.
McCormick recounted how Biden was “humiliated” by Vladimir Putin in 2011 when he was basically “body-slammed” during his first visit with the then-Prime Minister as his microphone was cut off mid-sentence in a speech.
“I mean, I don’t know how else to describe it,” McCormick told the Free Beacon. “To me it was like, here’s our great foreign policy expert and he just got punk’d. And Vladimir Putin just had no fear or respect for him.”
McCormick’s book, “Joe Biden Unauthorized,” is described as a “tough but fair truth told about a flawed American politician who should be respected, yes, but certainly not elected president.”
