The family of a Georgia man is demanding answers after he was beaten to death in a jail cell by a suspect arrested for allegedly murdering another man in a hate crime.
Eddie Nelson was housed in the same cell inside the Muscogee County Jail as Jayvon Hatchett, who is accused of stabbing a white Auto Zone worker last month and allegedly saying he wanted to kill white people after watching videos online of police brutality. On Saturday, Nelson was found beaten to death by the 19-year-old black man in what WLTZ reported was as a “gory scene inside the cell.”
Hatchett was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for the attack in August on the stranger who worked in AutoZone, claiming he “felt the need to find a white man to kill.” He had previously been arrested for felonies including aggravated assault.
For some inexplicable reason, he was then placed in the same cell with Nelson, a 39-year-old white man who was arrested for a probation violation on September 1. Nelson was pronounced dead at 2:30 a.m. Saturday, according to Assistant Coroner Charles Newton.
“It was an apparent beating by another inmate,” Newton said, according to WBOY-TV. “He had blunt force trauma around the head and neck.”
Nelson’s mother tearfully demanded answers.
“I have a question for the Sheriff. Why? Why did you put my son and that other man in there together? Why? Can you answer me that? I lost a son because of ya’lls negligence,” she told WLTZ.
The family’s attorney also questioned the poor judgment of prison officials for placing Nelson, whose probation violation was for failing to register as a sex offender, with Hatchett, who was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation after his arrest.
“If this mentally imbalanced individual had been a member of the Ku Klux Klan, they would not have put him in a cell with a black person. If he was a rapist, they wouldn’t have put him in a cell with a woman. If he had bombed a synagogue they wouldn’t have put him in a cell with a Jewish person. If he had been that white kid up in Wisconsin that shot those demonstrators they would not have put him in a cell with demonstrators,” attorney Craig Jones said.
“I mean this is either sheer stupidity or meanness that’s the only way I can explain it,” he added.
According to WLTZ:
The gory scene inside the cell was described as a bloody mess where Nelson was beaten in the head, face, neck and forearms allegedly by Hatchett. The nurse on duty refused to go inside the cell and the guard performed CPR according to a source with first hand knowledge of the incident. The guard was alerted to the beating by another inmate inside the mental health ward.
“How long does it take to beat somebody up to beat somebody to death with your bare hands and not have anybody notice,” Jones asked.
Nelson’s mother told the news outlet that her son’s arrest stemmed from a two-decades-old case in a “Romeo- Juliet” type relationship.
“He was a good boy, a good young man. He would give you the shirt off his back. All kids love him. He loved kids. He was a fine young man, a fine young man, a good son and he shouldn’t have died this way,” she said, adding “something’s got to stop. This has to stop.”
The initial incident with Hatchett was one of two Black Lives Matter-linked hate crimes on the same day that was largely ignored by the mainstream media as it did not fit the liberal narrative.

Sinclair allegedly told the officer at, the scene: ‘I stabbed him, I’m a psychopath,’ and ‘I’m the stabber,’” KCNC reported.
