Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti was slammed on social media after admonishing “every Californian” to conserve energy during the summer heatwave.
The California Democrat gave a real glimpse of what a future under the Green New Deal could be like when he tweeted Sunday afternoon urging residents to turn off, unplug and decrease the use of appliances while also opting to use fans instead of their air conditioning systems.
As the National Weather Service recorded record heat in the Los Angeles area over the weekend, and the state’s Independent System Operator, which oversees much of the power grid, declared a stage 2 emergency, Garcetti’s tweet on Sunday was met with immediate backlash and mockery online.
“It’s almost 3 p.m.,” he wrote. “Time to turn off major appliances, set the thermostat to 78 degrees (or use a fan instead), turn off excess lights and unplug any appliances you’re not using. We need every Californian to help conserve energy. Please do your part.”
The tweet even caught the attention of President Donald Trump’s son, Eric Trump.

Garcetti, who is the national co-chair for Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign, was shown no mercy on Twitter for his tone-deaf tweet which comes as residents of the state have faced an onslaught of power blackouts, as well as wildfires and other challenges as Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, continues to impose coronavirus restrictions and pander to extreme environmentalists.
In a Labor Day message, Garcetti told residents not to “step backwards” in the fight against COVID-19, urging them: “Don’t host or attend parties or gatherings.” The mayor came under fire last month when he ordered the water shut off for areas that dared to defy coronavirus social distancing orders.
Newsom warned about the potential for “rolling blackouts” in a tweet to residents on Saturday.

California’s ISO declared a statewide emergency Sunday evening following a similar move the day before, citing “excessive heat driving up electricity use and putting strain on the grid. ”
“Based on the current forecast and without significant conservation efforts, rotating power outages are likely throughout the state today between now and 9 p.m.,” a news release read, urging residents to voluntarily conserve energy in order to avoid rotating power outages.

Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties saw more than 47,000 residents without power on Sunday, all heat-related outages, according to Southern California Edison, Fox 11 reported. Impossibly high temperatures faced residents again Sunday and in Los Angeles County, the National Weather Service noted that the Woodland Hills area shattered records with a high of 121 degrees.
The U.S. Department of Energy responded to an urgent request from the Democratic-run state by issuing an emergency order authorizing emergency measures to deal with “a shortage of electric energy, a shortage of facilities for the generation of electric energy, and other causes.”
The demands on California residents to conserve power usage, pitting them at further health risk during ongoing coronavirus challenges, come as Democrat leaders in that state mandated a push to increase renewable energy dependency, even though the technology to sustain such a move was not yet reliable.
Garcetti’s tweet urging Los Angeles resident to “please do your part” ignited intense blowback on Twitter, as those like actor James Woods tweeted the obvious.

Others blasted the mayor and governor’s policy decision while noting that neither lawmaker was likely be sitting in their homes without air conditioning.
“We pay some of the highest taxes in the nation, and what we receive for those tax dollars are riots condoned by the city, and an insufficient energy grid to deal with the super-unpredictable fact that it gets f***ing hot in summer in CA,” the Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro tweeted.
