U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez set herself up for a round of stinging mockery on social media after whining that Republicans have an elephant as their mascot.
The progressive New York lawmaker sparked plenty of eyerolls on Twitter after she posted her jab at Republicans and offered a “new mascot proposal” that essentially suggested the left just “take elephants from Republicans.”

Ocasio-Cortez ridiculed the GOP for not announcing a new platform as this year’s Republican National Convention kicked off.
The RNC left the 2016 party platform in place in a new resolution explaining that the 2020 challenges and changes made the move necessary and, instead, they would “enthusiastically support” President Trump’s agenda.
“The RNC has unanimously voted to forego the Convention Committee on Platform, in appreciation of the fact that it did not want a small contingent of delegates formulating a new platform without the breadth of perspectives within the ever-growing Republican movement,” the resolution read.
Ocasio-Cortez mocked the decision on Twitter.
“GOP 2020,” she wrote. “‘We have no vision, no values, and no beliefs.’”

The congresswoman then turned her attention to the Republican mascot, tweeting that “elephants deserve so much better.”
Honestly elephants deserve so much better than to be a mascot for this
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) August 25, 2020
She followed up with her suggested plan.
“Progressives take elephants from Republicans, bc they are compassionate, empathetic creatures w nuanced social structures,” she wrote.
“General Dems can keep Donkeys if desired – we can unite under that tent,” she added. “Republicans are Honey Badgers.”
Here is my new mascot proposal:

General Dems can keep Donkeys if desired – we can unite under that tent.
Republicans are Honey Badgers

Plenty of Ocasio-Cortez’s fans applauded her take, especially the honey badgers suggestion — though some found that unfair.
Honey badgers are awesome!

That’s unfair to honey badgers, they can be mosquitoes
— Nathan Creek 🐝 (@NathanCreek97) August 25, 2020
Such a mean thing to say about Honey Badgers.
— Barry Schneider (@BSchneiderKC) August 25, 2020
The honey badger jab seemed to backfire.
That is actually an awsome Idea. For once I actually agree with you. As elephants are cool animals the honey badger is the badass of the animal kingdom. Nothing messes with them at all. That is the first thing I have ever agreed with you on. Congrats.

Honey badgers work their honey badger butts off and are loyal and will fight to protect and guess what I married one. So that’s a compliment. He also has traits of an elephant. Snakes are up for grabs if you guys want em?
— FullOfJoy (@RaisedRightJ) August 25, 2020
What’s sad is both the elephant and the honey badger have a higher IQ than you do @AOC
— Tom Pitter (@pitter_tom) August 25, 2020
But many Twitter users found the predictable problem with the elephant complaint.
There go the progressives again, wanting to take what someone else earned
— RealSoccerFC (@MaureenONeill_) August 25, 2020
Progressive’s mascot should be someone taking an elephant that isn’t theirs.
— Boomieleaks (@Boomieleaks) August 25, 2020
You’re being nice. It’s socialists, telling others what else they have the right to take from them.
— FaithInOurHumanity (@Live_by_Faith1) August 25, 2020
The part where progressives take something from others definitely makes sense. I’m good with honey badgers though.

Others slammed the Democrat’s whining and noted that there are plenty of other appropriate symbols to be considered.
this is not productive

Ocasio-Cortez even took a shot at her own party last week, criticizing the Democratic National Convention for targeting white moderates and not progressives like herself.
“Would I have done things differently? Of course. But as a young progressive Latina I know I was not the target audience for this convention. The target audience for this convention was white moderates who aren’t sure who they’re voting for in November,” she posted on social media following the four-day DNC.
“Do I agree with centering the programming on that audience? Not necessarily. I think we could have done more to rally turnout enthusiasm from our party’s base,” she added.
