The popular ride-sharing services Uber and Lyft are slated to suspend all their operations in California, and stranded residents who rely on the services for transportation may have nobody to blame but themselves and their own voting habits.
Last year California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, signed into law AB5, a radical, union-backed bill that basically outlawed full-time contractor work. Thanks to the bill, countless Californians lost their contract gigs and thus their source of income.
Here’s just one example:
Kathryn relied on freelance income to supplement her fixed retirement income. Now, she won’t be able to pay her bills or afford to live. #AB5 is taking its toll on retirees, single parents, students and families. #AB5stories pic.twitter.com/YpE6vZYsxj

At the time, Uber and Lyft refused to comply with the law because, like many businesses, theirs was and still remains based on contract work.
In a ruling last week, however, San Francisco Superior Court Judge Ethan Schulman sided with California Democrats and decreed that Uber and Lyft are violating AB5 by contracting their drivers. Promptly afterward, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra reportedly pounced.
“The California Attorney General obtained a court order that requires rideshare companies to hire drivers as employees—immediately—or else shut down,” Uber announced in a blog post Tuesday.
The ride-sharing company added that unless an appeal it filed is successful, “we will need to temporarily shut down by Thursday night.”

Lyft has reportedly issued a similar warning.
“Ride-hailing giants Uber and Lyft say they will temporarily suspend service in California beginning Friday if they’re forced to reclassify their self-employed drivers as employees with benefits,” the Orange County Register reported.
They’re both reportedly slated to suspend all their services until either they win an appeal or Californians en masse vote in favor of an amendment on Nov. 3rd that would exempt ride-sharing companies from AB5’s requirements.
Until then, though, riders and drivers like this will effectively be screwed:

“I am 71 and looking after my 93 year old mother. I depend on @Lyft to get groceries and meds and take dog to vet. Lyft was a lifesaver…[I’ll] be forced to take taxi to get food and meds and to get to the doctor. Just the basics.”#SaveCARideshare for people like Jan.

There are already virtually countless stories on Twitter of men and women who’ve lost their livelihoods and seen their lives come apart at the seams because of AB5, and with Uber and Lyft slated to suspend operations, even more stories will no doubt emerge.
It’s been an endless cycle of pain and tragedy for Californians because of the misguided belief by California Democrats that it’s somehow unfair for businesses like Uber and Lyft, among many others, to hire contractors instead of full-time employees.
Yet Democrats — from Gov. Newsom to AG Becerra and even the bill’s nasty creator, state Rep. Lorena Gonzalez — have completely ignored all the pain. So have pseudo media reporters like CNN’s Brian Stelter who purport to care about the fate of journalists yet are too busy obsessing over Fox News to say anything about the freelance journalists in California who have also been affected.
What, exactly do you get paid thousands of dollars for? I’m losing work in CA thanks to the Democrat evil #AB5. If all he does is watch Fox News all day, can I have his job @CNNPolitics? #RepealAB5 #NoPROAct #bravefirefighter

But most frightening of all is the lack of empathy from Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden, a man who’s vowed to make AB5 a nationwide law if he becomes president.
I support #AB5 in California, which will give workers the dignity they deserve in the workplace. I agree with @transportworker that we can’t let corporations undermine basic rights by adding these exemptions to ground-breaking legislation. https://t.co/bouzgRLBU7
— Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) March 7, 2020
For a man who blathers on endlessly about empathy, he’s shown none — absolutely none — for people like this:
AB5 has been a disaster and hurt the MOST VULNERABLE not helped them. Do you know how hard it is for gig workers to get unemployment? How about the people who use Uber & Lyft to get to work? Do you have any idea how hard it is to get a cab in LA? How dangerous for women to wait?

I am 53 years old and have never, NEVER!, pulled a voting handle for a Republican. And I will weep if I have to do it now. But I have to protect the livelihoods of me and my Independent Contractors. Please research and reconsider.

@JoeBiden I was so looking forward to voting for you. Now, I’ll vote for you, but vote Republican at every other opportunity. I can’t let AB5 become the law of the land. #unionMember #HatesAB5 #NoDemocraticSuperMajority #noLongerADemocrat #noPartyRepresentsMe #heartbroken

My mom either loses her income, or is forced to move out of CA to keep a 30 year career as an independent contractor, due to AB5. She’s 6th gen Ca born. You just lost our votes. For the first time in my life I voted red. I felt sick to my stomach.#RepealAB5 #DemsAgainstAB5
— Leina caldwell (@Leina1redngold) March 7, 2020
PLEASE reconsider your support of this terribly written law @JoeBiden. #AB5 takes away work from independent writers who CHOOSE to work for themselves & not be slaves to corporations. This is BY FAR my biggest reason to not vote for you. Support freedom for workers. Talk 2 @cafwu
— Rob Kachelriess (@rkachelriess) March 8, 2020
Well, then I guess I just im not voting democrat suddenly… what the actual heck… Mr Biden, have you looked in #AB5 or have you been told about it by the union people?
— Jamma Tardif (@jammatardif) March 7, 2020
COME ON. I want to vote for you, man. You’re supposed to be the sane one. Don’t put independent contractors out of business. We’re not exploited workers. We’re business owners. #IRSnotABC #NoPROAct

#AB5 has been devastating to the disabled and their families. Flexibility is needed when dealing with chronic illness, too.
Freelancing offers:
– less physical/ emotional stress
– less wear and tear on bodies
– elimination of challenges getting to/frohttps://t.co/q1TdYX6VZw— AndiHK (@AndiHK) March 7, 2020
: @JoeBiden @DrJillBiden I implore you to look further #ab5 it’s the first time in my life that I voted for republicans on the down ballot of our primary. In part thx fo @KevinKileyCA and work he’s doing to repeal this awful law. It’s esp. hurting women/seniors #ab5stories

Democrats don’t care in part because they think companies like Uber and Lyft are the bad guys for not doing what they demand. But what they refuse to consider in their ignorance are the exorbitant costs of businesses complying.
Because of AB5, companies that used to provide contractors with flexible work must now either hire the contractors as full-time employees (and thus pay bundles in added overhead costs) or drastically reduce their workload (as an example, the law prohibits freelance writers from producing more than 35 pieces for a single client per year).
Businesses can’t afford these changes, just as freelancers can’t afford to have their livelihoods plucked away from them at whim. The best solution, many have argued, is to just let the free market do its thing. Alas for those who’ve already lost everything or are slated to lose everything if Biden becomes president, the Democrats refuse to listen to anybody but themselves.
Of course, the residents have the option in November to reverse some of the damage, but only if they’re willing to STOP voting for Democrats (*Language warning):
Commiefornia is a garbage state. Stop voting for these people and their fucked up policies. https://t.co/VoT9XRBVtN
