Gov Abbott moves to cut the ‘lifeblood’ of revenue to cities that defund police

Under a proposed law, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has vowed to defund cities like Austin in his state that have, in turn, caved to socialism by defunding the police.

In an interview on FNC’s Hannity, the zero-tolerance GOP governor declared that “we believe in law enforcement in Texas.”

Sean Hannity prompted the discussion by noting that Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden wants to “reallocate” funds away from the police and running mate Kamala Harris supports defunding the LAPD in her home state, and that the defunding movement is gaining currency in cites across America run by liberal Democrats for decades.

“Tell me how this works in Texas?” Hannity asked.

Alluding to the anarchy that has occurred in some of America’s biggest cities while radical-left mayors stood by, Abbott responded that Texas won’t put up with removing funding from law enforcement and will withhold property taxes from any city that tries to do so, especially in a municipality like Austin, where crime is on the rise.

“First, you’ve seen and you have documented what’s happened in Portland, in Seattle, in Chicago, New York, in St. Louis, in cities across the country. Now Austin, Texas, has defunded law enforcement police …despite the fact that over the first six months of this year, the city ranked number one in the United States for the highest percentage increase in murders — was Austin, Texas

“And so we proposed a law yesterday that would apply to all cities in the state of Texas. If a city defunds law enforcement, they will lose the lifeblood of the revenue they receive from property taxes in Texas.

“What this does in English is going to defund cities and cities’ ability to operate at all if they try to defund law enforcement. We believe in law enforcement in Texas, and we are not going to allow replication of the types of policies that we’ve seen destroy cities like Seattle and Portland and others.”

When Hannity wondered why Democrat mayors are even refusing President Trump’s help to restore law and order despite rampant street violence and looting, Abbott said that misguided politicians are succumbing to socialism.

“They’re caving to the forces of socialism, either blind or maybe even knowing, that it turns that force of socialism over to other people who will hijack the city like what you saw in the autonomous zone in Seattle. So Texas is laying down a marker, and that is, whether it be the city of Austin or other cities, such actions are not going to be tolerated in Texas.

“We embrace law enforcement; we will not accept turning power over to the socialistic forces that seek to abandon the rule of law and abandon the law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line to keep our communities safe.”

By a unanimous city council vote, Austin, a blue enclave in red Texas, voted on August 13 to cut its police budget by $150 million or about one-third of the overall appropriation.

According to the Texas Tribune, an immediate $20 million cut “would include eliminating funding from three planned police cadet classes and reallocating funds to areas like violence prevention, food access and abortion access programs.”

“[T]he vote came after complaints about use of force against anti-police demonstrators and the Austin Police Department’s handling of a high-profile case involving a man who shot and killed an alleged protester who was carrying an AK-47 rifle,” Fox News explained.
