Protesters and Chicago cops in riot gear clashed on Saturday in the downtown commercial district known as the Loop as anarchy continues in the Windy City.

According to Superintendent David Brown, an originally peaceful protest turned violent, and 24 of the demonstrators were subsequently taken into custody, four of whom were charged with the felony of aggravated battery against an officer. Seventeen cops were injured in the confrontation.

Brown claimed that “multiple agitators hijacked the peaceful protest” that started at Millennium Park and began assaulting officers. Cops deployed pepper spray and used batons to disperse the crowd and restore order.

One officer was hit over the head with a skateboard. Demonstrators also used mace and other objects on officers, Brown noted.

WGN News filed this report:

“The group chanted things like ‘no justice, no peace’ as they called for defunding the police and abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Among their demands were the removal of police officers from Chicago Public Schools,” NBC Chicago explained.

As alluded to above, the video clip embedded below appears to show one of the protesters repeatedly striking a cop with a skateboard.

Compounding Chicago’s problems, out-of-control looting of upscale stores occurred last weekend under the failed leadership of far-left Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who seemed more concerned about a gathering of peaceful sunbathers rather than the thousands of looters that were destroying local businesses. The increased police presence, including a large contingent of officers on bikes who attempted to establish a perimeter, was in part a response to last weekend’s chaos.

The city even raised its famous downtown drawbridges over the Chicago River for crowd control purposes.

Chicago, the third most populous city in the country that has been run by Democrats for nearly 100 years, is also a municipality that has been engulfed in an ongoing epidemic of gang-related gun violence with no end in sight, which makes calls to defund the police sadly ironic, to say the least.
