While the George Floyd protests against police misconduct and so-called systemic racism dominated the headlines, the city of Chicago experienced its most violent day since 1961.

On May 31, murders claimed the lives of 18 people, “making it the single most violent day in Chicago in six decades, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab. The lab’s data doesn’t go back further than 1961,” the Chicago Sun Times reported. “It was the most violent weekend in Chicago’s modern history, stretching police resources that were already thin because of protests and looting.”

‘We’ve never seen anything like it, at all… I don’t even know how to put it into context.” senior research director at Univ of Chicago Crime Lab told the Sun Times.

“Most homicide victims in Chicago are young, black men, and the suspects are, too. But murders have fallen significantly in recent years, along with police-involved shootings. There were 764 murders and 12 fatal police-involved shootings in 2016, compared with 492 murders and three fatal police-involved shootings last year,” the Sun Times added.

During the time frame from Friday, May 29, at 7 p.m. through 11 p.m. on May 31, a total of 25 people were killed, along with 85 wounded in gun incidents.

Much of the violent crime is purportedly gang related, with innocent residents sadly caught in the crossfire, and with no end in sight.

Given the ongoing civil unrest and looting, Chicago cops are currently working 12-hour shifts with scheduled days off cancelled.

Rev. Michael Pfleger who leads St. Sabina Church in Auburn Gresham, described what he called “open season” on the South and West sides.

“On Saturday and particularly Sunday, I heard people saying all over, ‘Hey, there’s no police anywhere, police ain’t doing nothing,’” Pfleger to the Times.

“I sat and watched a store looted for over an hour,” he added. “No police came.”

A city completely controlled by Democrats and with strict gun control regs, Chicago has been plagued with gun violence for years, with weekends particularly a tragic flashpoint.

Chicago’s last Republican mayor served from 1927 to 1931. Assuming the tally was on the level (which is a big assumption), Hillary Clinton received about 84 percent of the vote in Chicago in the 2016 presidential election.

NBC Chicago indicated that the month of May saw a 20 percent reduction in crime, but shootings increased year over year by a massive 71 percent and murders by 60 percent.

In a 2018 article about Chicago’s crime wave, PJ Media asserted that “If you were somehow to identify and arrest every single one of the shooters involved in the weekend violence, you would no doubt discover that nearly all of them came from homes with absent fathers, and that nearly all of them had been previously arrested for violent crime.”

Liberals like community activist Rev. Michael Pfleger, who you may have seen on cable news from time to time, claim that “joblessness, food insecurity and a lack of housing,” which were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, “made a bad situation worse.”

Some Twitter users insisted that the situation in Chicago reflected misplaced priorities.
