Police officers in New York City are finding themselves literally under siege by street mobs when they attempt to make arrests, putting them in danger of being physically overtaken and at far greater risk of being killed.
In the days following the George Floyd incident in May, New York City — like others around the country — was rocked by protests that were initially in response to his death. While often rowdy, most demonstrations were peaceful.
But in the weeks and months since, those demonstrations have often escalated into overt acts of lawlessness, as viral videos posted to social media have demonstrated — leaving an overtaxed NYPD that is routinely undermined by the administration of Mayor Bill de Blasio to deal with the chaos.
The rise in anarchy did not occur in a vacuum.
Along the way, de Blasio has regularly criticized his police department and indicated his support for the Black Lives Matter movement, which, according to some experts, has since morphed into a Marxist political movement.
Such is his support that he went so far last week as to violate his own social distancing order so he could participate with activists in painting a “Black Lives Matter” mural across from Trump Tower, in what many critics saw as small-minded and petty.
He has also made exceptions to his ban on large social gatherings in response to the lingering coronavirus pandemic: For BLM demonstrators.
De Blasio’s increasing support for BLM has come at the expense of the NYPD, with which he has historically had a contentious relationship.
Last month, he agreed to a far-Left proposal supported by the organization to defund the department and shift money to social programs.
Also, his demand that the NYPD use a “light touch” when it comes to dealing with protesters, even those who resist cops, is having a deleterious effect on officers’ ability to deal with increasingly unruly and violent residents — and all while crime, especially gun homicides, rises.
The examples are numerous.
In an undated video posted by Ian Miles Cheong on Sunday, several NYPD officers were needed to arrest a black man who had to be tased by a cop after threatening the officer.
As the man resists, officers descend and are forced to establish a perimeter so they can successfully detain the suspect and get him to a squad car.

But in another undated video also posted to social media Sunday, a crowd of people resists NYPD instructions to disperse and instead advance on a much smaller group of officers, kicking at police bikes and threatening violence.

Another video posted online this week shows an NYPD officer put into a dangerous headlock by a perpetrator who appeared to interfere with two cops making an arrest.
As bystanders jeered the officers and shouted obscenities, the perpetrator can be seen entering the video, causing one officer to lunge at him. As the two tussled, the perpetrator put the officer in a headlock for several seconds before being convinced by another bystander to let the officer go.

Late last month, NYPD officers were called to ‘shots fired’ in Harlem and were met by mobs of people who took over trash-filled streets and hurled bottles and other objects at officers’ vehicles, forcing them to retreat.
“This is what a “light touch” looks like: Police officers responding to a shots fired job in Harlem last night were met with this. @NYCMayor, @NYCSpeakerCojo and company should be held responsible for surrendering our city,” the NYC Police Benevolent Association — the NYPD’s union — tweeted with an accompanying video.

Police cars & streets on fire, cops attacked — and last night a Detective & Officers were hit with Molotov cocktails by would-be cop killers. As we do everything to stop NYC from burning, all we hear from elected officials is criticism. Maybe they should try it on the front line. pic.twitter.com/Spshv5Skrl

Police officers are once again under attack by violent, organized terrorists. Last week, Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) pointed out the dramatic rise in crime in New York City, citing a WINS story which said: “There have been 112 victims in 83 shootings over a nine-day period ending Saturday, according to police.
“Amid calls to defund the police ahead of the June 30 deadline for the city budget, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said last week that the city’s homicide rate had hit a 5-year high and that the criminal justice system was ‘imploding.’ The number of people shot has risen 42 percent compared to last year,” WINS noted further.
