With the New York Police Department seeing a big spike in shootings, Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio has proposed a plan to cut $1 billion — more than 16% — from the department’s nearly $6 billion budget.

The radical left mayor announced the details of his proposal during a Monday press conference at City Hall, according to Fox News.

“My office presented to City Council a plan that would achieve the billion in savings for the NYPD and shift resources to young people, to communities in a way that would help address a lot of the underlying issues that we know are the cause of so many problems in our society,” de Blasio said.

Saying “we have an unprecedented opportunity to change some things,” the mayor’s plans are certain to please Black Lives Matter, with much of the money he’s stripping from law enforcement almost certainly benefiting the liberal non-profits calling for defunding the police.

“We’re in a whole different situation in fact than New York City has ever faced in our history – a health care crisis, an economic crisis, a disparity crisis, a budget crisis all wrapped into one and on a massive, massive scale,” he said. “We’ve gotta focus on those basics health, safety, food, shelter.”

You know, the entitlement programs that keeps the Democratic Party in business.

While facing an overall budget cut, due in large part to the pandemic, de Blasio was clear that the NYPD “is being treated clearly in a specific manner.”

“A number of agencies are being cut quite a bit, but we’re dealing with a specific reality with the NYPD unquestionably,” he said.

The mayor had previously credited his African-American wife, Chirlane McCray, for driving his decision to cut NYPD funding. Critics see this as a key boost to McCray’s future political career in the city.

As Fox News reported, the NYPD is the largest police force in the country with nearly 36,000 uniformed members and 19,000 civilian members.

At the same time as de Blasio’s proposed cuts, street violence in the Big Apple has jumped substantially.

The Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York, which represents over 50,000 active and retired police officers, noted as much in a tweet last week that said “the number of those wounded by gunfire climbed by 414% last week compared with the same period in 2019.”

Four days later, on Sunday, the PBA tweeted: “We had another 24 shooting victims in 24 hours yesterday: 17 shootings with 24 victims. That makes 59 shootings with 89 victims for the week as of this morning.”

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea told the Associated Press in a recent interview that while there may be a need for cuts, public safety should not be compromised.

“I think everyone has to cut. I think we’re going to be forced to do difficult things. We certainly get that,” Shea said. “What concerns me is a moment in time and some rash judgments stepping in and taking the place of some well thought out conversations about how to cut smartly.”

Meanwhile, chaos continues to reign in the streets of New York City, as seen in a video showing criminal elements in Harlem attacking police Sunday night, taking control of city streets.

In fact, the SBA took the remarkable step of saying the city is “dangerous,” advising “our friends in law enforcement both outside & in the USA. DO NOT visit NYC & DO NOT encourage friends & family to visit.”
