Mike Lee goes off on Dems’ ‘bat guano-inspired insanity’ after they block GOP resolution condemning mob violence

On Thursday, Senate Democrats blocked a resolution that would have formally condemned the sort of widespread left-wing “mob violence” that’s led to stores being looted, police stations being set on fire and innocent people being killed.

Drafted by Sen. Mike Lee, the now-failed resolution stated that “the rising tide of vandalism, mob violence, and the mob mentality that feeds it — including its cruel and intolerant ‘cancel culture‘ — should be condemned by all Americans.”

The resolution also differentiated between “peaceful demonstrations” and “mob violence,” called for prosecuting the perpetrators of mob violence, and expressed gratitude and appreciation to the “the innocent law enforcement officers, public officials, and private citizens who suffer the mob’s violence and endure its scorn.”

It was a relatively simple resolution, yet Democrats blocked it.

Watch Lee introducing the resolution below:

I thought it would be important to get the Senate on record condemning the rising tide of mob violence we see across the country, and the increasingly prevalent mob-mentality that is fueling it,” he said.

The violence struck home for me this week when a constituent of mine was shot after an armed mob surrounded his truck in Provo, Utah. The resolution is not controversial. Even in these divisive times, it’s something I think we can all agree on.”

To move forward with the resolution, Lee needed unanimous consent. But he failed to achieve unanimous consent because of complaints from Sen. Robert Menendez.

According to reports, Menendez wanted the resolution to also mention “America’s original sin, which is slavery,” and of course President Donald Trump.

“I would consider not objecting to the senator’s request if he also recognized and added to his resolution the fact that we have a president of the United States who ultimately provokes — provokes inciteful language and violence,” he reportedly said.

It’s not clear what slavery, which ended 155 years ago, has to do with the ongoing mob violence that’s led to historical statues being toppled and people being murdered.

It’s also not clear if Menendez had been trying to suggest that the president of the United States is responsible for left-wing extremists willingly choosing to rip apart their own communities, set up so-called autonomous zones and commit attempted murder:

Menendez also reportedly complained that the resolution mischaracterized what he falsely described as “overwhelmingly” “peaceful protests.”

In response to the Democrat’s complaints, Lee delivered an impassioned speech deriding Menendez and other Democrats for their “bat guano-inspired insanity.”

Just so everyone is clear about the bat-guano inspired insanity that we just witnessed, I just proposed a nonbinding resolution condemning mob violence and Senate Democrats objected. I don’t know whether to be outraged or embarrassed for them,” he said.

He also asked why Democrats were only targeting the president and not other political figures such as the mayor of Seattle who’d allowed an autonomous zone to be established in her city and grow into a hotbed of murder and thuggery.

“What about the mayor of Seattle? What about the City Council of Minneapolis? What about countless other people who have perpetuated, or enabled, or facilitated or coddled mob violence across the country?”  he asked.

“It’s one of the reasons why we’re not going to engage in this task of making it a political tit-for-tat — it’s not that. People are being shot, businesses are being looted, innocent Americans are being attacked and threatened. Lives are being ruined, communities are burning, literally burning. So whose side are you on?”

The answer to that question is pretty clear

Listen to Lee’s full speech below:

I don’t think one can oppose this without being comfortable with those things. These mobs are not progressive. These mobs are not enlightened. These not mobs are not edgy, they’re not hip. They’re fraud. They’re dimwitted, phony drama addicts,” Lee added.

Menendez took offense to the latter statement.

“Mr. President, parliamentary inquiry. Is this line not in direct violation of Rule 19?” he complained, referencing a rule that prohibits senators from bashing other senators.

“The chair concludes that pointing out that mob violence is dangerous to our nation is not contrary to Rule 19, or any other rule of this Senate,” apparent committee president Sen. Ted Cruz replied.

“Further parliamentary inquiry. There’s not a question of mob violence. The question is that impugning to members who did not agree with the framework and language of this resolution, that they are supporting mob violence. That must be in violation of Rule 19. If this is going to be a deliberative body,” Menendez continued complaining.

After he finished complaining, Lee concluded his speech.

It’s long past time to expose the shiftless idiocy of the anti-American, anti-science, anti-establishment, anti-Constitution mob, and remove their snouts from the federal trough,” he said.

“Colleges and universities that punish free speech and discriminate against conservative and religious students. City councils who defund their police departments and refuse to protect public safety. States that force doctors to mutilate confused children without their parents’ consent. School districts that embrace the ahistorical nonsense of the 1619 Project.”

He added, “The smug sneering privilege of all the above and much more, the whole garbage fire that is the so-called ‘woke ideology’ depends on federal money. The mob hates America on America’s dime. It’s time to cut off their allowance.”
