Lou Dobbs: ‘Nonsense’ narrative Trump might quit 2020 race is nothing but left-wing media ‘claptrap’

Fox Business anchor Lou Dobbs dismissed speculation that President Donald Trump could possibly drop out of the 2020 race if there isn’t a reversal in his polling numbers.

Dobbs called out the “claptrap” circulating about the president during Monday’s “Lou Dobbs Tonight” as he spoke with Trump campaign senior legal adviser Jenna Ellis.

Remarking initially about how Trump 2020 campaign manager Brad Parscale “has created a bit of a kerfuffle,” Dobbs noted that he is still “safe in his job” and went on to acknowledge that the “campaign looks a little uneven from day-to-day.”

Parscale came under criticism after an underwhelming turnout in Tulsa, Oklahoma for Trump’s first rally since the coronavirus pandemic lockdowns had shut down large events. Predictions of a sold-out arena never materialized and large sections of empty seats made for bad optics.

With reports that the president is trailing presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden nationally and in battleground states, and after weeks of a pandemic followed by civil unrest, a new report claimed that “GOP operatives” were questioning if Trump “could drop out of the race if his poll numbers don’t rebound.”

Dobbs referred to Fox Business’ Charles Gasparino’s reporting about the line of thinking, waving away speculation of Trump quitting.

“All of this nonsense talking — in the left-wing media — talking about this president would quit or, you know, not want to run for re-election,” Dobbs said to Ellis.

“I had recently the opportunity to talk with him. Anybody who talks to the president knows better than any of that nonsense, knows it’s all claptrap as usual,” he added. ” The man I talked to is fired up, he is in great spirits, and ready to raise a lot of hell on the campaign trail.”

“Yes, he is. He’s a fighter,” Ellis replied in agreement.

In a Twitter thread over the weekend, Gasparino addressed the speculation, adding that:  “I’m not convinced yet; he’s got time and he’s running against an opponent who is literally hiding in his basement.”

He added that the thoughts point to “how tense GOP operatives are about Trump losing and the party losing the senate and having their entire agenda abolished in a leftist wave election.”

Trump campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh called the claim that the president may well end his reelection bid the “granddaddy of fake news.”

“Everyone knows that media polling has always been wrong about President Trump – they undersample Republicans and don’t screen for likely voters – in order to set false narratives,” he told Fox News.  “It won’t work. There was similar fretting in 2016 and if it had been accurate, Hillary Clinton would be in the White House right now.”

The Trump campaign refuted the claims and called out the methodology being used in major polls.

“As was the case in 2016, the mainstream news media is relying on polling financed by their own operations and others, released publicly in order to set a narrative that conforms with their own worldviews,” the campaign said in a statement. “The president’s campaign has repeatedly called into question the validity of such polling, based on methodology, party representation in the sample, wording of questions, and other factors.”
