Democrats came under immediate fire after claiming President Donald Trump is “glorifying white supremacy” with a planned Fourth of July event at Mount Rushmore.

The official Twitter account of the Democratic National Committee learned the hard way that the internet is forever after tweeting, then deleting, a post condemning Trump’s plan to hold a fireworks celebration at the national landmark in South Dakota.

“Trump has disrespected Native communities time and again,” The Democrats, the DNC’s official Twitter account, tweeted on Monday, linking to an article published by The Guardian last week which claimed the event was being criticized by the Native American community.

“He’s attempted to limit their voting rights and blocked critical pandemic relief. Now he’s holding a rally glorifying white supremacy at Mount Rushmore- a region once sacred to tribal communities,” the tweet continued.

Apparently realizing how bad the comments were, the account soon deleted the tweet. But Twitter was soon flooded with screenshots of the offending remarks as well as heated backlash against the Democrats for targeting the iconic landmark honoring former Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

Fireworks have been prohibited over the landmark for a decade over fears of wildfires in the area. And with current concerns over the coronavirus, critics of the president slammed the planned event for promoting large gatherings of people.

But Native American activists are planning protests for Trump’s event and some are actively calling for the removal of the stone monument that has stood for nearly eight decades.

“Mount Rushmore is a symbol of white supremacy, of structural racism that’s still alive and well in society today,” Nick Tilsen, a member of the Oglala Lakota tribe and the president of a local activist organization, said, according to Associated Press. “It’s an injustice to actively steal Indigenous people’s land, then carve the white faces of the colonizers who committed genocide.”

But it was the tweet from the DNC that ignited a firestorm of backlash amid the backdrop of weeks of civil unrest in the nation and, most recently, many frenzied attacks on historic statues and monuments by leftist mobs. Fox News meteorologist Janice Dean seemed to already be on to something  last week when she wondered if Mt. Rushmore would be next.

“Would be curious to hear @TheDemocrats explain what part of shooting off fireworks at Mt. Rushmore for the 4th of July “glorifies white supremacy”. The fireworks? Mt. Rushmore itself? The 4th of July?” Republican pollster Logan Dobson asked in a tweet.

Radio host Jason Rantz tweeted: “The Democrats think Mt Rushmore is a display of white supremacy. There’s no saving this country if Biden gets elected.”

Other Twitter users roundly condemned the Democrats.

“All the Republicans have to do is run on a ‘Hey, at least we’re not the Democrats’ platform,” author and “The Rubin Report” host Dave Rubin tweeted.

Matt Whitlock, the National Republican Senatorial Committee senior adviser, added that “Democrats have lost it.”
