President Donald Trump took his infrastructure plans to the people on Thursday, posting a series of social media messages touting nearly $1 billion to be allocated to states for improvements.
Despite the reluctance of Senate Republicans to approve of the president’s larger $1 trillion effort to boost America’s roads, bridges and other infrastructure, Trump posted a series of tweets on Thursday revealing proposed plans to divide funding among 20 states, including Texas, Louisiana, Colorado and Nevada.
“Proud to propose a $25M award to @MichiganDOT to replace and expand the Blue Water Bridge port of entry in @Port_Huron. CRITCAL for security, operations, and commerce at our country’s third BUSIEST U.S.-Canada border crossing!” Trump tweeted in one of nearly two dozen messages.
“I’m proud to propose a $6.8M award to @WisconsinDOT from @USDOT to complete the last phase of the Merrimac Bridge rehabilitation – more efficient and lower cost rail car travel over Lake Wisconsin!” another tweet read.
“Great news for Louisiana!” Trump wrote, proposing the largest single allocation of funds, with $135 million to build 8.3 miles of elevated highway.

Much of the funding appeared to be proposed for state transportation departments and port operators.

Trump promised “HUGE innovation and development” coming to South Carolina which would have $34.6 million headed its way for road improvements and development.

Reconstruction of the interchange between Tropicana Avenue and Interstate 15 in Nevada would be facilitated with $50 million in funds and $56.8 million would head to New Castle County, Del., toward redesigning the interchange at Interstate 95 and State Highway 896, the president noted.

Port Houston in Texas was mentioned in a tweet about a proposed $79.5 million boost and another $73.7 million for the Puget Sound Gateway Program in Washington state. Rhode Island would be receiving $65 million and $71.5 million would help Washington County, Miss., complete the Greenville Bypass.

Trump’s new home state of Florida was not left out, with the president tweeting about proposed funds to help improvements in the Sunshine State.

Port Tampa Bay in Florida will be awarded $19.9 million from @USDOT to improve Hooker’s Point container facility, adding much-needed capacity to keep commerce moving and allowing the region to GROW!

In other tweets, Trump touted $40 million in funds for Arkansas as well as Minnesota, $38.1 million for Maine, $55.1 million to Kentucky and another $60.7 million for Eagle County, Colo.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is reportedly looking to lower the $1 trillion plan Trump is considering, hoping to significantly decrease the five-year reauthorization of the Highway Trust Fund in the wake of coronavirus stimulus bills that added trillions to the nation’s deficit.
A $1.5 trillion infrastructure plan with a focus on climate change was unveiled by House Democrats on Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi claimed the package would “make real the promise of building infrastructure in a green and resilient way.”
“Republicans have been a bit critical at points during the mark up and saying this is Green New Deal 2.0,” Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Peter DeFazio said.
“Those who don’t believe in climate change, tough luck. We’re going to deal with it,” the Oregon Democrat added.
