Michigan police are investigating an incident inside a Macy’s store where a white man was attacked by a black man who alleged he was called a racial slur.

The disturbing assault in the Macy’s store at the Genesee Valley Center in Flint Township was captured on video and quickly circulated on social media. Local rapper FT Quay posted a short video clip of the incident on his Facebook page Monday, saying it was not the whole video.

“Yes we are investigating and at this point, no one is in custody,” Flint Township Lt. Brad Wangler confirmed to MLive.

The video showed an unidentified white man wearing a protective mask inside a Macy’s department store as he spoke on a cell phone. A black man then approached him and began punching him.

Knocked to the ground, the man, whom police identified as a store employee, asked, “what are you doing that for?” as he reached out to prevent the other man from hitting him again. Standing over him threateningly, the assailant warned him not to touch him.

“I didn’t touch you … I’m sorry,” the man on the ground replied before he was punched two more times by the man.

FT Quay claimed in his post that the white man was overheard using the N-word. He wrote that he and his “bro” were in the store and asked the man if a shirt seemed too small. The man allegedly responded then returned to his call and supposedly told the person on the phone it was “no one just some n—-r,” which set off the attack.

“He thought we ain’t hear ’em because his mask was on,” the post read.

Activist and controversial film producer Tariq Nasheed also shared the video on Twitter.

“A man at a store in #Flint allegedly referred to a black man in the store as a ‘n***er’ while talking on the #phone,” Nasheed wrote. “The black man overheard him, then things went left.”

A Macy’s spokeswoman noted that the store had increased security at the location following the incident.

“We are deeply saddened about the incident that took place on Monday (June 15) at Macy’s Genesee Valley as the safety of Macy’s customers and colleagues is our top priority,” Andrea Schwartz, senior director of media relations for Macy’s, said.

“Violence in the workplace of any kind is unacceptable. All the materials from the evening have been reviewed and it is clear that the attack was unprovoked. We are working closely with local authorities on this investigation, and will defer any further comments about the case to them per policy,” Schwartz added. “Since this event, Macy’s and mall management have added additional security to ensure our customers and colleagues can safely enjoy their shopping experience.”

Police issued a news release that explained that they were dispatched to the store in response to an assault complaint.

“Officers learned an employee of the store was assaulted by a young black male who fled the scene with a second individual after the assault,” the statement read. “Store surveillance video confirmed the assault against the employee. Investigators also learned the assault was recorded by the second individual and shared on social media.”
