Fox News contributor Juan Williams claimed in an op-ed published Monday that President Donald Trump is responsible for current renewed racial tensions around the country following the shooting deaths of two black men at the hands of white police officers.
Writing in The Hill, Williams placed the blame squarely on the president.
“The hellish road to the racial turmoil of the last few weeks began the day Donald Trump was elected president,” Williams began, noting that he “predicted” a year earlier in his book, “What the Hell Do You Have to Lose? — Trump’s War on Civil Rights,” that there would be such events.
“‘When African Americans protest repeated cases of young black men killed by police,’ I wrote, ‘President Trump sees only valiant police protecting white America against a race of people with high rates of criminal activity. He is oblivious to black people as fellow Americans suffering injustice,’” Williams noted in his column.
He noted since that time, the president has allegedly “dedicated himself to reversing civil rights progress” while “denigrating people standing up for equal rights,” without providing examples or elaborating on which civil rights are now being denied minorities by order of the president.
As Left-wing journalists have done in the past, Williams attacked the president for criticizing NFL players who took a knee during the playing of the National Anthem as “son[s] of bitches,” ostensibly to protest perceived injustices including those at the hands of police.
Trump never made any racial references in his criticisms, only that he disapproved of them during the playing of the anthem. Both black and white players engaged in protests.
Williams then claimed that, “according to the FBI,” “hate crime attacks” have gone up “against blacks, Jews, Latinos and immigrants,” though he provided no evidence tying the spikes to the president.
“Some people say Trump is appealing to his base,” Williams writes. “But keep in mind that Trump now stands apart from the 68 percent of white Americans, in a Washington Post poll last week, who say Floyd’s killing is not an isolated event but part of a broad problem with how police treat black people.”
The Washington Post’s polling is suspect, given that the paper endorsed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016 and described Trump as “dreadful.” Also, the Post’s polling leading up to the last election was consistently wrong.
Williams then said that the president “is apart from NASCAR, which has decided to ban Confederate flags…is apart from several Republicans in Congress, who last week joined calls to remove statues of Confederate politicians from the Capitol,” and “is apart from military leaders calling for the names of Confederate generals to be taken off military bases.”
Trump has not commented on the NASCAR decision, but he said he was against renaming U.S. military installations because he believes it would be dishonorable to the hundreds of thousands of men and women who trained for war at the bases, from the past to the present day.
Williams also noted, without context, that Trump settled a lawsuit brought by the Nixon administration “by agreeing to stop blocking blacks from renting apartments in his buildings.”
And he said — again, with evidence — that “the same racist impulse allowed Trump to falsely insinuate that the first black president had not been born in the U.S. and was therefore illegally in the White House.”
During the Obama administration, Trump sent investigators to Hawaii to see if they could find any information about the then-president’s birth records. Trump has questioned whether Obama was actually born in the United States, a requirement to become president.
Williams then complained that the president’s “history of playing on racial division for political gain” was allegedly evident when he told police officers in 2017 “don’t be too nice” to suspects taken into custody.
“That fit with his Justice Department acting to end consent decrees with several cities written to stop police from using excessive force,” Williams noted further, a reference to what many believe were forced agreements between the Obama administration and police departments for the purpose of interfering in local policing for allegedly attempting to curb racial bias.
Williams also leveled additional accusations against the president, without providing any evidence as to how, exactly, a president who simply has different ideas about policies and the country is inherently racist.
“One could write — and I did write — an entire book on Trump’s hostility to black people,” Williams said. “The latest twist to the story is that Trump’s racism is finally catching up with him.”
