America’s mainstream media industrial complex has predictably responded to the release of the Flynn unmasking list by either downplaying the list, ignoring the list, or portraying the glaring, incontrovertible implications of the list as conspiratorial.
According to the Media Research Center, a media watchdog group that serves as a less partisan antithesis to Media Matters, ABC News and NBC News’ evening broadcasts chose to ignore the list altogether.
Over at CBS News, “anti-Trump White House correspondent Paula Reid downplayed the significance of the three-page list of names” and also “stepped up to defend presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden, whose name appeared on the list most recently.”
Reid’s remarks were reportedly made during a brief, one-minute-long segment on the list.
“Now, on this list of approximately three dozen officials is former Vice President Joe Biden, and administration officials here at the Trump White House, they’re suggesting that Flynn was targeted in an effort to undermine President Trump,” Reid reportedly said.
“But Democrats have pushed back on this and insisted that, in fact, this list illustrates how widespread the concern was about Flynn’s activities and that all of the appropriate laws were followed.”
Her swift “report” neglected to include an abundance of facts, many of which were not ignored by her counterpart over at Fox News, David Spunt.

And on CNN meanwhile, senior media reporter Oliver Darcy falsely framed the unmasking list as a “conspiracy” and derided its implications as a “smear.”
“That Fox News would push a dishonest disinformation campaign against Trump’s political opponents is reprehensible, but not surprising,” he wrote.
“The network has been pumping poison into the national conversation for quite some time. But that Fox is engaging in such behavior as more than 83,000 Americans lay dead from a virus that has upended American life is particularly repugnant.”
Award-winning renowned investigative journalist Catherine Herridge, formerly of Fox News and currently with CBS News, would likely disagree.
In tweets posted Wednesday afternoon, she outlined some of the details that her broadcast peers at CBS chose to ignore:

It’s not clear if Darcy views Herridge as a “reprehensible” conspiracy theorist as well.
It’s also not clear what exactly is “reprehensible” about pointing out clear-cut facts, such as the fact that Obama-era U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Samantha Power lied to Congress when she testified in late 2017 that she’d never issued an unmasking request in late 2016 pertaining to then-incoming National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.
Or what exactly is “reprehensible” about noting that recent remarks made to ABC News by Biden contradict what’s shown in the unmasking list, which is that on Jan. 12, 2017, he issued his own unmasking request as it pertains to Flynn.
Or what exactly is “reprehensible” about pointing out that, only days after these unmasking requests were made, someone leaked information to the media.
What’s known is that even the editorial board of The Wall Street Journal, a renowned paper that’s been around for 91 years longer than the veritably juvenile network that is CNN, believes these findings raise serious concerns.
“The Flynn unmasking is important because it occurred amid a media frenzy over supposed Trump campaign collusion with Russia,” the board wrote Wednesday.
“Leaks to the Washington Post about the conversations between the Russian ambassador and both Mr. Flynn and soon-to-be Attorney General Jeff Sessions were played up as central to the collusion scandal. They caused Mr. Sessions to recuse himself from the Russia probe and Mr. Flynn to be fired. While unmasking isn’t illegal, leaking intelligence is.”
“The Flynn unmaskings, and the timely media leaks, take the story into the Obama White House. The peaceful transition of power is a hallmark of American democracy, or at least it used to be. It isn’t supposed to be an opportunity for the Administration that lost the election to cripple its successors as they take power.”
If CNN had its own editorial board, perhaps it’d try to refute these arguments. But it doesn’t.
As for Darcy, he has faced increasing criticism over the past year for his bizarre brand of opinion-based “reporting,” veritable “lurking” and hypocritical “triggering.”
