Comedian Tracy Morgan takes heat for level-headed call of unity, and end to Trump blame game

Comedian Tracy Morgan had some advice for Americans and a reality check in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic that earned him immediate backlash from the left.

The star of the TBS show “The Last O.G.” defended President Trump during an interview with the “Today” show on Tuesday, calling for unity and an end to criticism of the commander-in-chief who is trying to lead the nation at a time of unprecedented crisis.

Morgan began trending on Twitter after the sometimes awkward interview, as his infamous humor seemed to leave host Hoda Kotb at a loss for words.

But perhaps more unexpected was his defense of the president, which earned him scathing criticism from “tolerant” liberals.

“The struggle is real,” Morgan said in the interview from his home where he has been quarantined due to the virus.

“People want to criticize the president, but imagine being a president of a country and have your country get sick. So it’s difficult for him. We’ve all got to pull together as people, now,” he said.

The president has been under relentless criticism for his handling of the coronavirus outbreak, coming under fire for everything from being too involved in daily news briefings to inform Americans of the latest developments, to being slammed for not doing enough, or not acting quickly enough to foresee, plan and defeat the pandemic. All of this, as Trump has continued to receive high approval marks including a record-high approval rating with Fox News.

“Now is not the time for blame and all these other things, and anger,” Morgan told Kotb. “It’s here now. We just got to be together.”

“We’ve got to all stay safe. Nobody wants to transmit it, nobody wants to attract it, nobody wants to get it,” the 51-year-old actor and comedian added. “So let’s just stay safe and do the protocol that we have to do to protect our kids and our pets.”

The comedian also had words of praise for healthcare professionals and first responders, calling them “heroes” who deserve “respect.”

“These are the good-headed people, they know what they’re doing,” said Morgan. “They’re fighting the front lines, I love them.”

“I know these people, I know they work hard to take care of you,” he added. “I’m very proud of them, they’re my heroes — while we’re running out of the burning building, the firemen are running in.”

“These police officers that come out of their homes and patrol the streets, they don’t know if they’re ever going back home,” said Morgan. “We gotta give them respect.”

Morgan’s defense of the president was predictably slammed by the liberals and incurable Trump haters but many applauded his honesty while noting, again, the hypocrisy of the left.

“Good to know that not everyone in Hollywood has #TrumpDerangementSyndrome,” radio talk-show host Larry Elder tweeted.
