Barr on Durham probe: Something ‘far more troubling here’ than ‘mistakes and sloppiness’

Attorney General William Barr believes U.S. intelligence officials engaged in “troubling” activity and an ongoing investigation will soon likely be exposing the issues.

Barr spoke with Fox News host Laura Ingraham about the investigation by U.S. Attorney John Durham into the origins of the Trump-Russia probe and gave a glimmer of hope to those hoping to see justice served after three years of attacks on President Trump that have gone unpunished.

The attorney general revealed that more than just “mistakes or sloppiness” have been uncovered in Durham’s probe of investigations against the Trump campaign, speaking about the forthcoming release of the final report during his appearance on Fox News Channel’s “The Ingraham Angle” which aired Thursday.

“What can you tell us about the state of John Durham’s investigation? People have been waiting for the final report on what happened with this, what can you tell us?” Ingraham asked.

“I think a report may be, and probably will be, a by-product of his activity. But his primary focus isn’t to prepare a report. He is looking to bring to justice people who were engaged in abuses if he can show that they were criminal violations,” Barr replied.

“So that’s what the focus is on. And as you know, being a lawyer, you, yourself, building these cases especially the sprawling case we have between us that went on for two or three years, it takes some time. It takes some time to build a case,” Barr said, referring to Durham who has been investigating potential FBI and Justice Department misconduct from just before the 2016 election through the spring of 2017.

“So he’s diligently pursuing it. My own view is that the evidence shows that we’re not dealing with just mistakes and sloppiness. There’s something far more troubling here,” Barr added.  “And we’re going to get to the bottom of it.”

Durham’s probe turned into a criminal investigation in October and Barr vowed that “if people broke the law and we can establish that with the evidence, they will be prosecuted.”

President Trump has repeatedly called the Russia investigation a deliberate witch hunt aimed at removing him from office and Ingraham asked about his frustration over the fact that many who attempted to undermine him have been “able to basically flout laws and so far with impunity.”

“I think what happened to him was one of the greatest travesties in American history,” Barr responded.

“Without any basis, they started this investigation of his campaign,” he added. “And even more concerning actually is what happened after the campaign, a whole pattern of events while he was president, so I — to sabotage the presidency, and I think — or at least have the effect of sabotaging the presidency.”

Barr’s interview also took on the treatment of the president by critics with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Durham, who was tapped by Barr in April 2019 to look into surveillance activities by U.S. agencies against members of the Trump campaign, including the FBI’s handling of the infamous Steele dossier, has been going over some of the same territory as that covered by the Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz in his investigation of the surveillance of the campaign and Trump aide Carter Page by the FBI.
