Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel slammed Democrats for exploiting the coronavirus crisis “for political gain.”
McDaniel called out Democrats in a Fox News op-ed for their push for an all-mail election in the wake of the global pandemic, warning that the plan to “throw election integrity to the wayside” would “fundamentally changing how Americans vote.”
“The overhaul would vastly expand opportunities for fraud and weaken confidence in our elections, but all Washington Democrats see is a potential benefit for their party,” McDaniel wrote, pointing a finger at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former Vice President Joe Biden, who is likely to become the party’s 2020 nominee.
McDaniel questioned the doublespeak by Democrats who are inciting fear about the coronavirus while proposing election procedures that undermine the safety guidelines to “try to give themselves a political edge.”
“The Democrats’ all-mail ballots proposal is a ruse to legalize ballot harvesting nationwide,” she wrote.
“Any person would be allowed to return an unlimited number of absentee ballots for voters, opening the door for political operatives to deliver ballots in bulk. They could even be paid as long as he or she is not paid based on the number of ballots returned,” McDaniel added.
Pelosi claimed that $4 billion was needed to enable voting by mail in an effort to keep voters safe due to the pandemic.
“Vote by mail is so important to … our democracy so that people have access to voting and not be deterred, especially at this time, by the admonition to stay home,” she told reporters last week.
Biden has also been pushing the idea.
“I think it’s time we start thinking about how we’re going to hold elections,” he said on ABC News Sunday “Is it going to mostly be by mail, which is not the preferred route for everyone — how are we going to do that? How are we going to make it available to everybody?”
McDaniel pointed out several problems raised by the proposal, including the issues caused by inaccurate voter registration lists as absentee ballots may end up being sent to those not even eligible to vote.
“At a time of so much uncertainty, we should not reduce confidence in our elections. Mail-in voting and ballot harvesting do just that, delaying results for days and even weeks,” she wrote.
“Mail-in voting increases the opportunity for fraud,” McDaniel contended, citing a report in The New York Times which found “votes cast by mail are less likely to be counted, more likely to be compromised and more likely to be contested than those cast in a voting booth.”
“The Republican Party will always defend free and fair elections, especially in times like these,” McDaniel continued. “That is why we will continue to fight and win against attempts by Democrats to use the pandemic as an excuse to circumvent election integrity.”
“We are all in this fight together,” the RNC chairwoman concluded. “We will get through it. But we will not throw out our most elementary promises of democracy, because agenda-driven Democrats do not want to let a pandemic go to waste.”
