Calls to swap Cuomo out for Biden in 2020 race have Trump weighing in

President Donald Trump seemed to practically endorse an alternative to Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential nominee.

Trump expressed his blunt view that the former vice president was not “capable” of leading the nation during a Fox News interview, and posited that New York’s Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo would make a “better candidate” in the 2020 race.

The president was asked about speculation that Cuomo would have been a better choice as a Democratic candidate and potential 2020 nominee than 77-year-old Biden, with “Fox & Friends” co-host Steve Doocy noting the New York Democrat’s current high approval ratings amid the battle against the coronavirus pandemic.

“One of the reasons his numbers are high on handling it is because of the federal government, because we give them ships and we give them ventilators and we give them all of the things that we’re giving them,” Trump pointed out.

“One of the reasons he’s successful is because we’ve helped make him successful,” he added.

“Now if he’s going to run that’s fine. I wouldn’t mind running against Andrew. I’ve known Andrew for a long time, I wouldn’t mind that but I’ll be honest I think he’d be a better candidate than Sleepy Joe,” Trump declared.

“I don’t mind running against Joe Biden,” he added. “I watch these critiques of me … they’re written out, ‘Joe Biden has said,’ and then they put this very highly sophisticated statement out. I say Joe Biden didn’t write that statement and Joe Biden, I guarantee you, didn’t even see that statement. So no, I think probably Andrew would be better.”

“We want to always make sure that we have a great president — we have somebody that’s capable. I personally don’t think Joe Biden is capable,” Trump said. “We’ll see what happens. You know, I wish him luck.”

Apparently the president is not alone in his thoughts on Cuomo as some Democrats are looking to him to save the party, and the election, from Biden.

“I see Cuomo as the Democratic nominee this year. If we could switch Biden out for him, that’s the winner,” comedian Bill Maher told New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd. “He’s unlikable, which I really like.”

Fox News host Tucker Carlson also expressed his lack of confidence in a Biden nomination, predicting last week that he would not move on to debate Trump ahead of the election in November. The Democrat’s media and interview challenges in the last weeks amid the coronavirus outbreak have proved to Carlson that Biden is in “mental decline.”

“I am utterly convinced, and would bet money, that Joe Biden will not be the Democratic nominee on Election Day. I just don’t believe that. I really don’t,” Carlson said on Charlie LeDuff’s podcast “No BS News Hour.”

“What did you say?” LeDuff asked, incredulous.

“I sincerely and totally believe that Joe Biden will not be the Democratic nominee on Election Day,” Carlson reiterated. “I don’t believe that.”

“How does that math work?” another co-host asked.

“Well, the math doesn’t work, but it’s not about math, it’s about will,” the Fox News host said. “So the Democratic Party is intent on taking power, period, period, and they mean it, and they’re willing to do kind of whatever they think works. I mean that’s demonstrable.”

Carlson admitted he personally liked Biden bur felt that he “is not prepared” and “can’t beat” Trump or “lead the country.”

“He shouldn’t be working still,” he said. “I’m not being mean. I know him. I’ve always liked him. But that’s true. And so, those are two trains traveling toward each other at high speed. Two competing imperatives. We’ve got to win, but we’ve got a guy who can’t win. Therefore, they’re gonna replace him.”

“This is not the guy I’ve known, and you can ask anybody who knows him or has watched him,” Carlson continued. “This is not him. He’s a completely different person, and he’s in decline and I feel bad about it. That’ll be me someday … I hope somebody loves me enough to not let me run for president.”
