New York Times editorial board member Mara Gay is under fire again after blaming a “racist Twitter mob” for backlash she received over her poor math skills.
Gay was torched after an op-ed published in The New York Times on Wednesday made her out to be the martyr in the math fiasco last week in which she and MSNBC host Brian Williams fumbled with numbers on the air as they discussed billionaire Mike Bloomberg.
Although most of the criticism Gay received over the Bloomberg segment was aimed at her lack of math skills, she claimed in a tweet promoting her new piece in The Times that a “racist Twitter mob came for me over a trivial math mistake.”
The questionable math was evidenced during MSNBC’s “11th Hour” last week as Gay and Williams noted the amount of money Bloomberg had spent on advertising before dropping out of the 2020 race. Gay noted that the former New York City mayor “could have given every American a million dollars” and the segment continued to derail as the two proved they must have failed 4th-grade math.

“Unfortunately, quite a few Americans can tell you what it’s like to be the target of a Twitter mob over a gaffe,” Gay wrote in her op-ed titled, “My People Have Been Through Worse Than a Twitter Mob.”
“When you’re a black woman in America with a public voice, a trivial math error can lead to a deluge of hate,” the subheader claimed.
A racist Twitter mob came for me over a trivial math mistake. I’m not going anywhere. https://t.co/McxAT8P7OI

“My great sin was trivial, harmless, silly. What’s it like when people are trying to cancel you for a math mistake? Weird, and maddening and painful,” Gay wrote.
“Of course, in my case it wasn’t really about math, as anyone who read through my mentions on Twitter or saw my inbox would know,” she added, sharing examples of the few racist responses.
“I write a lot about the underdog, which tends to make some people feel threatened, or simply uncomfortable. When I appeared on that TV show last week, I had been working for many days interviewing black voters in the South who were determined to defeat Donald Trump, whom they see as the nightmare embodiment of the old hatreds many of them fought to overcome,” she wrote as she continued to push her racism narrative.
But Twitter users were not buying her attempt to blame her math ineptitude on racism.
I’m not sure this is gonna get you on the medal stand in the Oppression Olympics, but I applaud your effort. You’re basically Rosa Parks.

Of course racism is always wrong.
But dismissing your error as a “trivial math mistake” is unreasonable.
It was an enormous error. Literal 5th grade math was required to adequately understand the wild inaccuracy of the campaign finance error that was made. https://t.co/yJMZ2ql5ve

It wasn’t that trivial, Mara.

Race had nothing to do with it and most people simply mocked it (ftr, it wasn’t a trivial error, it was the difference between $1m and $1.50). They also mocked Brian Williams, who is a white male. https://t.co/fvz5IxpXqe

Are you under the impression that Brian Williams wasn’t also widely ridiculed?
— Matt Palumbo (@MattPalumbo12) March 11, 2020
Correction: People who can do basic math mocked you. Then, as usual, you blamed “racism” like all liberals do.
— Mark Dice (@MarkDice) March 11, 2020
Your job is journalism, and you did it poorly. That’s why you were mocked. But pull out that race card.
— Jessica Fletcher (@heckyessica) March 11, 2020
I didn’t realize that pointing out that someone is atrocious at math was “racist” now. You ever get tired of pretending to be a victim to excuse away your ignorant behavior, or nah?
