Sen. Mitt Romney appears poised to vote against his Republican colleagues once again in a move that could delay an investigation of Hunter Biden and his dealings with Ukraine.
The Utah lawmaker who faced heavy backlash from Republicans for voting to convict President Trump at the Senate impeachment trial, is now questioning the motivation behind an effort to subpoena records about former Vice President Joe Biden and his son.

“There’s no question that the appearance of looking at Burisma, Hunter Biden, appears political,” Romney told CNN’s Manu Raju as he spoke with reporters on Thursday.
“And I think people are tired of these kind of political investigations and we hope that if there’s something of significance, it needs to be evaluated or it be done by perhaps the FBI or some other agency that’s nothing as political as perhaps the committee of our body,” he added.
“We also have a lot of work to do, matters that are not really related to Burisma. We probably ought to focus on those things,” Romney continued.
“But, many got the chance today to talk to the chairman and get his perspective, see what information he has and see whether there’s something that might be helpful to clarify exactly what has happened in the past and put this behind us,” he said, referring to Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee of which Romney is a member.
Republicans hold an 8-to-6 majority in the committee which is set to vote on the subpoena next week. Romney’s potential vote to side with Democrats would leave the committee with a 7-7 tie its effort to subpoena documents related to a former Ukrainian diplomat who had ties to the Democratic consulting firm Blue Star Strategies.
“Joe Biden has never adequately answered these questions,” Johnson told “The Story with Martha McCallum” this week. “I’ve said repeatedly, if there’s wrongdoing the American people need to understand that. If there is no wrongdoing, or if it’s not significant, the American people need to understand that.”
Romney appeared to view the investigation of the younger Biden’s role on the board of Ukrainian energy company, Burisma, while his father was vice president, as politically motivated.
“I would prefer that investigations are done by an independent, non-political body,” Romney told the Washington Post. “There’s no question the appearance is not good.”
In a report during the impeachment process last year, it was revealed that top Mitt Romney adviser Joseph Cofer Black joined the board of directors of Burisma while Biden was still serving.
