Failed Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton shared “secrets” about 2020 contenders during a “Tonight Show” appearance but dramatically tossed one name aside.
The former secretary of state played along with a “Bag of Secrets” on Wednesday’s show, sharing her thoughts as she drew out names of 2020 presidential candidates without identifying them. Though Clinton emphasized to host Jimmy Fallon that she was not endorsing any of her party’s contenders, it was pretty clear where she stood after the game.
She recalled that she and the person named on the first card she drew “were reprimanded for giggling on the sofa in the Oval Office.”
Though she moved on, Fallon later guessed correctly that it was former Vice President Joe Biden, who Clinton went on to praise during the show. In her “secrets” about the candidate on the next card, Clinton said, “this person delivered the state this person represented — represents to Joe Biden on Super Tuesday.”
“I think I know who she is,” Fallon replied, apparently referring to Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar.
“This person is a terrific public servant, speaker, dresser, dancer, you know, all-around really good person,” Clinton said of the next name, in an apparent reference to California Sen. Kamala Harris.
In what was apparently pointing to former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Clinton said: “this person is an incredibly talented person, young but charismatic and dynamic, and breaks barriers.”
As she pulled out the next card, however, Clinton hesitated before throwing it over her head without any comments, prompting a shocked reaction from Fallon.
“Whoa!” he exclaimed, laughing.
“I wanna pick that one up right now! Wow!” he added. “Who was, what was…?!”
“These are all of the candidates including…” Fallon began to ask, trying to clarify the names in the bag.
“People who were in, people who still are in, yeah,” Clinton agreed.
“Including people that are up for…” Fallon pressed.
“Yup, people who are currently…” Clinton nodded.
“OK, OK, alright, alright, alright, I kind of saw that happening,” Fallon responded, as he and many in the audience probably surmised it was Sen. Bernie Sanders’ name on the discarded card.
Ahead of the Super Tuesday voting, Clinton had shared with ABC’s Linsey Davis that Sanders would not be the Democrats’ “strongest nominee,” emphasizing that “the most important issue is who can defeat Donald Trump.”
She also doubled down on her previous comments on her former 2016 primary rival, calling his current presidential campaign “baloney” and labeling the Vermont lawmaker a “career politician.”
“That was my authentic opinion then, it’s my authentic opinion now,” she said.
And though she told Fallon on Wednesday night’s “Tonight Show” appearance that she was “not planning to endorse” any of the Democratic hopefuls yet, she held nothing back in her gushing praise of Biden.
Speaking of Biden’s South Carolina success, which fueled the momentum for his Super Tuesday wins, Clinton said he “had so much energy and what he had to say was, you know, really enthusiastic and positive and about what he was going to do and who he was, and the people of South Carolina, obviously, rewarded that.”

She added that she has known Biden “a really long time,” saying he is a “deeply decent person” who “doesn’t take cheap shots at people.
“He doesn’t insult people as a way of, you know, trying to put people down and lift himself up,” she added.
