Democratic strategist James Carville was so pleased with former Vice President Joe Biden’s comeback that he offered a salute to House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn.
Carville, who managed Bill Clinton’s first presidential campaign, has made no secret of his fears Sen. Bernie Sanders could be the 2020 Democratic nominee, and on MSNBC Tuesday, he expressed his relief at Biden’s success with a thanks to Clyburn, who seemed to secure Biden’s South Carolina win by endorsing him.

“That guy literally saved the Democratic Party,” Carville said right at the start of his MSNBC appearance, giving the military hand gesture to the South Carolina lawmaker.
“I think we’re going to see obviously Bloomberg and Warren are not long for this world. I think what we might be starting to see, and I’d like someone on the panel to weigh in on this, we might see Democrats starting to ask Sanders, ‘let’s don’t drag this thing out any more than we have to,’” he continued.
“People want to get on to the general election,” Carville, who also advised Hillary Clinton in her 2008 Democratic primary run, added.
“They want to get on to defeating Donald Trump. I think Sanders is showing tonight, hardly any showing with the African-Americans, our loyal constituency, and our most exciting new constituency – educated white women. He showed nothing,” he said.
Despite success in the New Hampshire and Nevada Democratic primaries, Sanders failed to win over voters in southern states such as North Carolina, Alabama, and Virginia. MSNBC’s other talking heads also wondered as the results rolled in Tuesday whether Sanders could successfully face off against President Trump in the general election.

“If we’re going to beat Donald Trump, we can’t be lollygagging around here for a lot longer because it seems the party is starting to make a decision,” Carville added.
The veteran Democratic strategist, who was called out as a “political hack” by Sanders, raised the alarm last month as he acknowledged he was “scared to death” of the direction of the Democratic Party and the possibility that the democratic socialist could be the 2020 nominee.
“We’ve got to decide what we want to be. Do we want to be an ideological cult? Or do we want to have a majoritarian instinct to be a majority party?” Carville continued. “What we need is power, you understand? That’s what this is about. Without power, you have nothing. You just have talking points.”
Carville’s remarks on Tuesday came as Biden’s faltering campaign seemed to be resurrected on the heels of his South Carolina win. Biden tipped his hat to the lawmaker during a speech to supporters in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
“I was proud to be endorsed by Jim Clyburn, man, he is something else,” Biden said. “Our campaign reflects the diversity of this party and this nation, because we need to bring everybody along. We want a nominee who will keep Nancy Pelosi the Speaker of the House and win back the United States Senate.”
Second Amendment proponent Dana Loesch agreed that Clyburn was the “biggest winner” of the night.
The biggest winner tonight may be James Clyburn. That man’s coattails pulled Biden through.

If Biden rips the nom away from an avowed socialist (and truthfully unapologetic communist), the whole party may owe a debt to @WhipClyburn . An award. Something.

Clyburn told CNN on Wednesday that he was “a bit surprised” at how well Joe Biden performed on Tuesday, but he also addressed the campaigns of Michael Bloomberg and Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

“Let me congratulate — I guess — Mayor Bloomberg is demonstrating once again what a class guy he is,” he said on CNN’s “New Day” Wednesday moring. “I’ve heard this morning that he’s going to do some reassessments. And I hope he will really coalesce around Joe Biden like the rest of us will and have a tremendous victory in November.”
