Tucker questions NBC standards that ‘forced’ Chris Matthews off air, while others guilty of ‘moral crimes’ still employed

Fox News host Tucker Carlson reacted to the news of Chris Matthews’ departure from MSNBC with a pointed question to the network.

Carlson wondered why others guilty of “moral crimes” are still employed by MSNBC while Matthews, whose real “sin” was being “old and unfashionable,” was out.

Matthews “shocked viewers” as he announced he was leaving the network after decades, the Fox News host said on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” Monday.

The veteran MSNBC host announced his immediate “retirement” right at the start of Monday’s “Hardball” show, leaving the air and stunned viewers at the first commercial break.

Matthews’ departure came after weeks of controversial comments and a growing call for him to be fired after his “sexist” questioning of Sen. Elizabeth Warren and for comparing Sen. Bernie Sanders’ victory in Nevada to Hitler defeating France in World war II. And in another blow, columnist and frequent MSNBC guest Laura Bassett detailed Matthews’ alleged inappropriate comments and sexist behavior toward her in an op-ed published last week.

“Accusations of sexist comments may have been the final straw,” Fox News’ Trace Gallagher told Carlson in a report Monday.

“I never thought I’d see that happen,” Carlson said.

“I’ve known Chris Matthews very well since 1995 when I started appearing on his show regularly. He’s everything you think he is,” he added.

“Groveling, in the end, couldn’t save him. It never does. I would say his real sin, of course, was being old and unfashionable, that’s why they’re making him leave,” Carlson said.

But he went on to note the hypocrisy of forcing Matthews out while some NBC and MSNBC employees are still at the network.

“What’s interesting though, this is NBC News,” he noted.

“So as long as we’re making people leave for moral crimes, you’ve got to wonder why is Joy Reid still on the air, who lied and got the FBI implicated in her lie?” he asked, referring to the MSNBC host’s claim that she had evidence that anonymous hackers were responsible for the offensive posts rediscovered on an old blog.

“Or Noah Oppenheim, the buddy of Harvey Weinstein, or Andy Lack, or Joe Scarborough, who still works there? Really? Amazing!” Carlson continued, referring to NBC News’ President Noah Oppenheim, NBC News Chairman Andy Lack and the host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“So it would be worth asking, what exactly is the standard we’re applying here that forced Chris Matthews — I’m not a fan, but just being honest — that forced Chris Matthews off the air?” Carlson asked. “We should know more about this.”

Reactions to Matthews’ exit abounded on Twitter where Bassett noted, “it’s about time,”author Ann Coulter called it “utterly embarrassing for the #MeToo movement,” and actor James Woods noted the thrill of watching liberals eating their own.

Others weighed in on Carlson’s remarks about Matthews and his former employer.
