Two days before Super Tuesday, which is sure to be a defining moment in the 2020 Democratic primary as 14 states take to the ballot box, Pete Buttigieg unexpectedly announced that he was ending his presidential campaign.
A move that follows former Vice President Joe Biden’s big win in South Carolina, and a move that President Donald Trump points to as a desperate consolidation of forces within the party to take out socialist Bernie Sanders, the front-runner in the race.
Recalling memories of 2016, when the DNC had its fat thumb on the scale in favor of Hillary Clinton over Sanders, the president said the independent Vermont senator is going to be taken out again by the Democratic Party in 2020.

The 38-year-old former South Bend, Ind., mayor got just 8% of the vote Saturday in South Carolina, but still finished ahead of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. Yet, to the surprise of many, Buttigieg returned home Sunday and announced in a speech that he was formally suspending his campaign.

Buttigieg was not a fan of Sanders, slamming the self-avowed democratic socialist in his concession speech after the Nevada caucus.
“Before we rush to nominate Sen. Sanders in our one shot to take on this president, let us take a sober look for what is at stake for our party, for our values, and for those with the most to lose,” he said. “Senator Sanders believes in an inflexible, ideological revolution that leaves out most Democrats — not to mention most Americans.”
Trump tagged the openly gay candidate with the Alfred E. Neuman nickname, after the famous Mad magazine mascot, accurately predicting in January, “He’s not going anywhere. He was a lousy mayor of a place that is not doing well.”
On that note, there was plenty of scuttle about whether Biden dangled a potential vice presidential pick, as there were reports prior to Buttigieg’s announcement that the two campaigns were talking about consolidating support around Biden.
At the very least, Buttigieg will be pushed to the top of the list of coveted figures in the lucrative public speaking circuit.
Pete will be speaking at a banking conference for $250k in about 8 days.

As for where Buttigieg’s voters may go, the results of a Quinnipiac poll showing the second choice of his supporters can be seen below — a last-minute endorsement of a candidate would surely impact the results:

With Buttigieg’s exit from the race, Trump is now the youngest man running in 2020, as Biden, 77, Sanders, 78, and billionaire Michael Bloomberg, 78, all white males, are older — so much for the Democratic Party being the party of the youth and the future.

Suffice it to say, Bernie’s people are not thrilled about the possibility of the party aligning against their candidate.
Pete dropped out only hours after he said he wouldn’t. He was offered something. The party establishment is freaking out and making some shady behind-the-scenes deals.
