Black Michigan pastor rebukes Democrats: ‘Do I have a place in this party?’

The Democratic Party is learning that it can no longer take the black vote for granted. At a meeting in Detroit, black Democrats asked DNC chairman Tom Perez whether the party has veered so far-left that it has alienated millions of black voters.

Pastor Chris Martin of the Cathedral of Faith in Flint, Michigan, said he’s a lifelong Democrat. Martin is a moderate who doesn’t support abortion or same-sex marriage.

Pastor Martin noted that the Republican Party has done more outreach to the black community in Michigan than the Democratic Party has.

This Democratic apathy — combined with the party’s continued migration to the Far Left — has Martin concerned that there’s no room for centrist Democrats like him in the party anymore.

“I am a moderate Democrat, but I do not support abortion. I do not support same-sex marriage,” Pastor Martin said, according to the Detroit Free Press. “I have people in my congregation who ask us, ‘How do we preach one thing on Sunday, but then campaign for people who are totally opposed to that?’

Martin asked: “Do I — as an African-American pastor, a lifelong Democrat — have a place in this party? Or is it all about healthcare and [illegal] immigration? What about the things we have to deal with?”

The pastor observed that several districts in Michigan that were historically Democrat strongholds voted Republican in 2016.

“There are union members from the UAW who are meeting with [Republican Senate candidate] John James. That’s unheard of!” Martin said. “What would be the narrative for this party to get the apathy reversed for those types of counties that you’re going to need to win this state?”

As BizPac Review reported, President Trump has vowed that unlike the Democrats — who take black voters for granted — he will fight to earn every vote.

“We are going to compete for every single vote in 2020,” Trump vowed. “And we expect a historic share of the black vote come Election Day.”

At a rally in South Carolina this weekend, Trump touted his criminal-justice reforms and the record-low black unemployment rate under his presidency.

The President said: “The unemployment rate among African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans and Asian-Americans has reached record lows. Black poverty levels are the lowest ever recorded in the history of our country.”

Trump continued:

“For decades, Democrat politicians betrayed African-Americans. They forced their childen into failing schools. They shipped their jobs to foreign countries. They pushed unfair [jail] sentencing policies on them.

They favored illegal aliens over their own constituents. My administration is reversing these failed policies and delivering record gains for African-Americans.”

Three new polls indicate that President Trump’s approval rating among black voters has quadrupled since 2016.  In addition to alienating black voters, Democrats have alienated millions of white voters.

Victor Davis Hanson — a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, a public-policy think tank — said the trend is devastating for the Democrats.

“Even 20 percent African-American support for Trump would all but dismantle Democratic Party presidential hopes for 2020,” Hanson wrote at Real Clear Politics. “Republican presidential candidates now routinely win 55 percent to 60 percent of the so-called white vote. That lopsided margin may widen further, given that progressive Democrats are not making any effort to recapture turned-off white working-class voters.”
