Ted Cruz mocks AOC in epic science spat: ‘Btw, congrats on the science fair’

Sen. Ted Cruz called out Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for her grandstanding on the topic of science after she slammed President Donald Trump’s handling of the coronavirus threat.

The Texas Republican challenged the freshman Democrat from New York in a tweet responding to her attack on Trump for naming Vice President Mike Pence to lead the federal government’s coronavirus response.

“Mike Pence literally does not believe in science,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on Wednesday following Trump’s press conference on the virus outbreak and the administration’s plans to combat the threat.

“It is utterly irresponsible to put him in charge of US coronavirus response as the world sits on the cusp of a pandemic,” she continued. “This decision could cost people their lives. Pence’s past decisions already have.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s criticism echoed that of Democrats and other Trump critics who have gone into overdrive in their attempts to politicize coronavirus in the relentless quest to hurt the president.  But Cruz did not let the congresswoman’s jab go unchallenged in a tweet asking if she was the “oracle of science.”

“As you are speaking as the oracle of science, tell us, what exactly is a Y chromosome?” he asked.

Ocasio-Cortez fired back, but her insulting shot at Cruz and her cringe-worthy defense of her credentials only made things worse.

Not only did the 30-year-old progressive darling tout her “awards from MIT Lincoln Lab & others for accomplishments in microbiology,” she went on to add another tweet pointing to her winning a prize in the “largest pre-college scientific research event in the world.”

Ocasio-Cortez effectively laid out her resume in her jab at the 49-year-old Texas senator, who got his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and graduated from Harvard Law School before serving as Texas’ solicitor general and Associate Deputy Attorney General in the Justice Department.

Cruz fired back, mocking the “evolution” of the Democratic Party while pointing out that Ocasio-Cortez ignored three scientific questions he had asked so that she could share her “resume & ad hominem attacks.”

He followed up by re-asking the questions again.

“I await your engagement on the actual substance, as a colleague as you noted, hopefully without the insults,” he concluded.

While there has not yet been a response – or any answers to the questions – from Ocasio-Cortez, Cruz did offer his belated congratulations on her achievement.

Twitter users have mocked the congresswoman’s self-promotion.
