Lindsey Graham shows no love for Bernie, but says his likely nomination will be a lock for House GOP

Sen. Lindsey Graham believes it will be “great news” for President Trump and Republicans if Sen. Bernie Sanders secures the Democratic nomination.

The South Carolina Republican predicted former Vice President Joe Biden would win Saturday’s South Carolina Democratic primary but countered that Sanders will likely get the nomination as he spoke to Fox News host Martha MacCallum.

“He’ll win and I think he’ll win by double digits,” Graham said of Biden on “The Story with Martha MacCallum” Thursday.

” [House Majority Whip] Jim Clyburn, helping Joe Biden, the African-American Congressman, Clyburn is a really well, well thought of, highly respected member of Congress. About 60 percent of the primary electorate will be African-Americans. And Joe is beloved in the community and he will win decisively,” the senator said before adding a caveat to his prediction.

“But I think it’s too little, too late for Joe. This is Bernie’s race to lose right now,” he said.

Biden spoke to voters at a South Carolina town hall about Sanders needing to not only beat President Donald Trump but also win back the Senate for Democrats.

“It’s a criticism of whether or not you think you’re going to be able to help elect a Democratic senator here against Lindsey Graham, which I’m going to help do,” he said.

The video clip caused Graham to chuckle before he gave MacCallum his assessment of a Sanders nomination.

“A Sanders candidacy is great news for President Trump. It is great news for Republicans in the House and the Senate,” Graham said. “We have a Democrat representing the 1st Congressional District in South Carolina, Joe Cunningham. Bernie Sanders is his worst nightmare.”

“Joe Biden is a wonderful man. He would be a formidable general election opponent for President Trump. I think he would probably help the down-ballot Democrats more than most people running,” Graham added about his former U.S. Senate colleague.

“It looks like Bernie is going to win the nomination unless something dramatically changes, but if you’re a down-ballot Democrat in the Midwest and the south, Bernie Sanders is your worst nightmare,” he added. “I think we take the House back with Bernie for sure.”

Graham dismissed the concern over recent Gallup Poll numbers indicating that 76 percent of Democrat voters surveyed said they would vote for a socialist candidate like Sanders.

“That says a lot about the Democratic primary but it’s a slice of the political pie,” Graham said.

He later took a shot at Sanders for remarks during Tuesday night’s debate in Charleston when he called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “racist.”

“What Bernie Sanders said about the prime minister of Israel makes my blood boil,” Graham told MacCallum.

“Bibi is the longest-serving prime minister in the history of Israel. He has been elected by the Israeli people for over a decade. He’s a good, strong man. He is not a racist,” he added.

“It says more about Bernie than it does Bibi,” Graham said. “And in Bernie’s world, the radical Islamists are the victims and Israel is the oppressor. It’s upside-down politics.”
