Nervous Dem megadonor reportedly urging party leaders to rally around a candidate to thwart Bernie

A well-known Democratic mega-donor has reportedly reached out to party leaders to rally behind a 2020 candidate in an effort to thwart the campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Bernard Schwartz, the CEO of BLS Investments, has recently tried to reach out to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, according to CNBC.

“We should know who is the best person to beat Donald Trump, and with all due respect, Bernie Sanders cannot beat Trump,” he told the network.

Though he has reportedly not heard back from the Democratic leaders, Schwartz is urging them to take a stand with Super Tuesday looming and Sanders appearing to be the front-runner in the race to capture the nomination.

“They have good political reasons not to endorse until the primary is over, but I think we are losing too much if we give up on this position,” the key Democratic financier said.

Former Vice President Joe Biden or former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg are options Schwartz would support though he told CNBC that he has not named a candidate for Pelosi and Schumer to get behind.

According to CNBC:

He has donated over $885,000 to the House Majority PAC, a super PAC dedicated to helping Democrats get elected to the House of Representatives, while giving more than $620,000 to the Senate Majority PAC, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.

During the 2018 congressional midterms, Schwartz gave more than $3 million to Democratic causes.

Pelosi told reporters Wednesday that she would “enthusiastically embrace” whoever the Democratic nominee is, dismissing speculation that she is afraid of Sanders being the choice.

She also claimed that she did not see a Sanders nomination as a threat to the Democrat majority in the House.

Meanwhile, Schumer also seemed to indicate he would be okay with the Vermont senator as the 2020 nominee.

“We have a lot of strong nominees. … I’m not supporting one over the other, but I think every one of them will beat President Trump,” the New York Democrat said earlier this week.

That consensus does not appear to be across the board for Democrats as many have been vocal about their concerns with the independent and self-proclaimed democratic socialist as the nominee.

And Democrats in the House could be facing another tough call as Republicans are reportedly going to force a procedural vote on a proposal condemning Sanders for praising Fidel Castro. Cuban-American Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart of Florida is sponsoring the legislation in response to Sanders’ praising the legacy of Cuba’s late dictator in a “60 Minutes” interview.
