House Speaker Nancy Pelosi defended her petty act of ripping up her copy of President Trump’s State of the Union speech and admitted that it was done for the “attention.”
The California Democrat wasn’t sure if the president actually snubbed her extended hand at the State of the Union address earlier this month, but in an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Pelosi was adamant that there was not a page of his speech that didn’t “have a falsehood on it.”
“Did the President refuse to shake your hand?”Amanpour asked.
“He didn’t shake it when I extended it. I don’t know what you call that,” Pelosi replied.
“But in any event, that had nothing to do with my tearing of the State of the Union address. My tearing it up had to do with — I thought if I could find a page that doesn’t have a falsehood on it, I’ll spare it, but I couldn’t find that,” she said, adding that at one point, the emotional homecoming of Sgt. 1st Class Townsend Williams from the Middle east gave her pause.
“I almost did when the soldier was coming home, that was so beautiful. But get back to the bottom of the page and there he goes again,” Pelosi said.
She claimed that she had “no intention” of ripping up her copy of the speech and the small tears she made to the pages as the president spoke were for her to remember where certain remarks were that she wanted to flag.
“I’m a speed reader, so I was reading ahead, I knew what was there,” she told Amanpour. “I got past a third of it and I thought this is terrible. I made a niche on a couple pages thinking you ought to remember what was on this page, on this page, then I realized most every page had something in it that was objectionable.”
She went on to contend that there was “very little press” on House legislation, ignoring the fact that the Democrats were the ones to keep beating the impeachment drum.
“It seems if you want to get press you have to get attention. So I thought, well, let’s get attention on the fact that what he said here today was not true,” Pelosi said of the president’s speech.
But the Democrat leader’s delusion was not just over the president’s speech. In another segment of the interview, Pelosi cut into Amanpour’s questioning to insist Trump was not acquitted by the U.S. Senate.
“What about though, the fact that the president seems liberated … he was acquitted, his poll ratings are higher,” Amanpour began before being interrupted.
“He was not, there was no acquittal,” Pelosi claimed.
“You can’t have an acquittal unless you have a trial, and you can’t have a trial until you have witnesses and documents. So he can say he’s acquitted and the headlines can say acquitted, but he’s impeached forever, branded with that, and not vindicated,” she said.
Later, Pelosi declared that she could not even see Trump reelected for a second term.
“I can’t even envision a situation where he would be re-elected, but we don’t take anything for granted. … but everybody knows that we must be unified in making sure that he does not have a second term,” she said.
“Our country is great, the American people are wonderful, we’re a resilient country, we can withstand one term, but the destruction that he would do to the courts of our country and the environment … he must be defeated,” Pelosi added.
