Jake Tapper appears to mock hopeful Biden supporters with brutal reality check

CNN anchor Jake Tapper appeared to mock some Biden supporters with a brutal reality check during the Iowa caucuses.

A small group supporting former Vice President Joe Biden were caucusing in Des Moines where Tapper was reporting from on Monday when he approached them about the 2020 Democratic candidate failing to meet the threshold to earn delegate support in the precinct.

Tapper checked in with supporters of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who made the “viability” threshold with 102 supporters out of the needed 56. He then noticed the Biden group and made his way over to them.

“This does not look like 56 people,” Tapper said as he approached the small group supporting Biden who came in sixth among Democratic presidential candidates.

“You look like lovely, wonderful people, but it doesn’t look like you’ve made the viability threshold,” he noted.

“Not yet,” one optimistic woman replied. ‘There’s time.”

“There’s time.” Tapper repeated. “This… year?”

“I’m not trying to be funny, but what are you going to do?” he asked.

“We’re going to stand strong with our first choice,” one man told the CNN anchor. “And when other candidates are not viable, we know that Joe is a lot of people’s second choice. And we’ll become viable in the second alignment.”

“So you think there’s still a possibility that they will come here?” Tapper asked, apparently referring to supporters of Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Andrew Yang, who did not seem to have gotten enough support at the precinct.

The man confirmed that was the plan.

“So, hope springs eternal,” Tapper quipped as he walked away.

On Sunday, Tapper had called out Biden for declining interviews on Sunday news shows during an interview with 2020 contender Pete Buttigieg.

“I want to note I fully appreciate you coming in and taking our questions,” Tapper said. “Vice President Biden has yet to do a Sunday show interview. You have done—I can’t even count how many times you have agreed to do interviews, so thank you for taking our questions.”

Last month, the CNN host wondered “is it even right to call Joe Biden the frontrunner if he’s being eclipsed” by his 2020 rivals in fundraising.

Monday’s caucus results ended with no official vote totals in what Trump’s campaign manager Brad Parscale called “the sloppiest train wreck in history” as the Iowa Democratic Party blamed “inconsistencies” in some precinct reporting.

Meanwhile, Tapper’s embarrassing encounter with Biden supporters in the Des Moines precinct sparked plenty of social media reactions.
