Greta Thunberg has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by two lawmakers from Sweden.
This marks the second consecutive year that the teenage climate activist has been nominated for the award, with the recommendation coming from two members of Sweden’s Left Party, Jens Holm and Hakan Svenneling, who made the announcement on Monday.
The 17-year-old, whose “Fridays for Future” effort sparked an international movement among students to skip school and attend environmental rallies, lost out on last year’s nomination by three members of the Norwegian parliament to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali.
According to this year’s nominating lawmakers, Thunberg “has worked hard to make politicians open their eyes to the climate crisis,” adding that “action for reducing our emissions and complying with the Paris Agreement is therefore also an act of making peace,” the Associated Press reported.
Thunberg joined other young climate activists last month at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland to demand that public and private sectors immediately divest from fossil fuels. The left’s progressive climate darling called on forum attendees to stop the “madness” of investing in fossil fuel exploration and extraction, prompting U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to suggest that “after she goes and studies economics in college, she can come back and explain that to us.”

“I’ve been warned that telling people to panic about the climate crisis is a very dangerous thing to do, but don’t worry—it’s fine—I’ve done this before and I can assure you: it doesn’t lead to anything,” Thunberg told attendees at Davos. “Our house is still on fire. Your inaction is fueling the flames by the hour. We are still telling you to panic, and to act as if you loved your children above all else.”
President Trump, who has previously voiced criticism of Thunberg’s alarmist predictions, dismissed the “perennial prophets of doom” who warn of the coming “apocalypse” in a speech at the forum.
“To embrace the possibilities of tomorrow we must reject the perennial prophets of doom and their predictions of the apocalypse,” he told an audience that included Thunberg.
The teen, who was named Time magazine’s “Person of the Year” for 2019, was awarded the Right Livelihood Award in 2019 along with three others.

If she wins the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize, she would be joining the youngest Nobel laureate, Malala Yousafzai, who received the award when she was 17-years-old. Yousafzai, a Pakistani education advocate who survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban and was awarded the prize in 2014.
Former vice president and environmental activist Al Gore received the award in 2007 for his climate change efforts.
News of Thunberg’s nomination sparked expected applause from the left and plenty of other reactions on Twitter.
