Alan Dershowitz shares what made Bernie Sanders scowl at impeachment trial

Harvard Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz said socialist Bernie Sanders scowled at him when he defended President Trump on the Senate floor during the impeachment trial.

Dershowitz — an internationally recognized expert on U.S. Constitutional Law — recounted that Sanders and some other Democratic senators tried to intimidate him when he presented his arguments.

However, Dershowitz told Fox News host Jesse Watters that other Democrats complimented him for his expertise.

“I would say Bernie Sanders gave me a scowl. He particularly gave me a scowl when I made a hypothetical. I said, ‘What if some day a Democrat gets elected president and the Democrats say to the Israelis: ‘Quid pro quo, you’re not getting a nickel of the allocated funds unless you stop the settlements?’

I made that point looking at Sanders and he looked at me, scowling because he would be that [hypothetical] Democratic president.”

Both Bernie and Elizabeth Warren suggested that they would withhold aid to Israel until it stops building settlements in occupied territory if they were elected President.

Dershowitz said it is not illegal or impeachable for an American president to set preconditions before giving out hundreds of millions of dollars in foreign aid.

Saying otherwise lowers the bar so much that every President can easily be impeached on that basis going forward. “It wouldn’t be illegal,” he explained. “It would be foreign policy, even though it was a quid pro quo.”

In fact, this happens all the time. In the past, both Democratic and Republican presidents have withheld aid or threatened to withhold U.S. loan guarantees to pressure Israel to change its policies.

Despite what the Left and the media screech, the United States is not unconditionally obligated to give every country in the world billions of dollars in aid every year for no reason. As President Trump has repeatedly underscored, the U.S. should no longer be the world’s piggy bank.

Trump said: “[Globalists, socialists, and leftists] believe America is the world’s piggy bank and that your tax dollars should subsidize the economy, military, and defense of every other nation in the world but our own.”

Alan Dershowitz, a lifelong liberal who voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016, said Democrats loved him before — when he sided with them. But now, the Left shuns him because he’s defending the Constitution on behalf of President Trump, whom they despise.

“This is the second time I was on the Senate floor. The first time I was there, I was representing a Democrat, Alan Cranston. The Democrats loved me [then].

And now that’s not the case because I was defending the Constitution and the person I was defending it on behalf of was Donald Trump.”

Dershowitz continued: “There were some dirty looks, but after I made my main speech, senators walked over, including some Democrats — including one of the manager’s lawyers — and praised me for my speech. They said that I had educated them. One of the senators said I kept them awake. Some of them were giving me scowls as I made persuasive Constitutional arguments.”

US foreign aid by country
In 2017, the U.S. gave $5.7 BILLION to Afghanistan and $3.7 BILLION to Iraq. Why is the US giving billions of dollars in taxpayer money to countries that hate us? Meanwhile, the Left ignores rampant homelessness among Americans.

Watters said: “The entire left-wing media and a lot of people on the Democratic side of the House and the Senate are saying you are responsible for making the argument that President Trump is king, he’s a monarch. What do you say about that?”

Dershowitz said, as usual, the Left deliberately distorted his argument to promote their anti-Trump narrative.

“They deliberately and willfully misinterpreted my argument because they thought I was effective with some senators. I said that a president can be impeached if he commits crimes, or criminal behavior akin to treason or bribery. That was my argument.

And then I said just because he committed noncriminal conduct and may have been motivated in part — like all politicians are — by looking at how it will impact his reelection, that mixed motive can’t make something into crimes.

It’s a lie to to say that I said a president can a commit crimes because he thinks it’s in the public interest. That is nonsense!”

Jesse Watters asked Dershowitz if President Trump thanked him for his deft defense at the trial. Alan said yes.

“He thanked me and said I did a lot of good for the country,” Dershowitz said. “As I said in my speech on the Senate floor, I love America and I love the Constitution. This transcends any individual. I was trying to avoid a terrible precedent that could impact any future president.”
