Watergate journalist Carl Bernstein slammed Senate Republicans for what he deemed a “cover-up” in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump.
The veteran reporter reacted to speculation Thursday that witnesses will not be allowed to testify in the Senate trial as a key vote appeared to turn against Democrats clamoring to prolong proceedings with “new” evidence and testimony.

“It’s not a real trial and it’s not a real exoneration,” CNN political analyst Kirsten Powers said during a panel discussion on “Anderson Cooper 360″ Thursday, as reports indicated that GOP Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee had said he would vote against allowing witnesses during the impeachment trial.
“It’s a cover-up. That’s what the Senate has now done,” Bernstein interjected.
“They have covered up what the President of the United States has done in his grievous action when they had the ability to find out more and reach a bipartisan, as it were, decision,” he added, noting that if witnesses like Trump’s former national security adviser John Bolton were called to testify, it could even “be exonerating” for the president.
Alexander’s decision to vote against issuing subpoenas for witnesses and documents left Democrats hanging on other pivotal Republican senators who would side with them. Alexander issued a statement indicating that, though he felt the president’s actions in Ukraine were inappropriate, the Senate did not have a Constitutional right to remove him from office for inappropriate actions.

Utah Republican Sen. Mitt Romney and Sen. Susan Collins, the liberal Republican from Maine, decided to side with Democrats while all eyes fixed on Alaska GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski to make her final decision. Naturally, Democrats have already begun discrediting the Senate trial and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who may have the needed votes to end the sham process.
“This is a cover-up. Plain and simple,” Bernstein declared on CNN.
“And there has been no attempt throughout this proceeding by the Republicans in this Senate of the United States — the so-called world’s greatest deliberative body, which we now can see how deliberative it is — that we have seen now a really shameful episode in our history that’s going to read down for many, many years,” he continued.
Bernstein added an extra jab at constitutional lawyer Alan Dershowitz and his “catechism for the cult of Trump,” referring to the argument he made in the Senate trial about what is an impeachable offense.
“That’s an astonishing assertion that Dershowitz made about what the president can do,” Bernstein said.
Dershowitz defended himself and slammed the media for twisting his words, contending that “CNN, MSNBC and some other media willfully distorted my answers.”

But throughout the process, it seems liberals only hear what they want to hear. And with the meltdown over the looming vote that could end the Democrat charade, the volume is being turned up by a complicit media with talking heads like Bernstein offering their unchallenged assessments.
There was, however, plenty of challenge on Twitter to the journalist and author’s CNN remarks.
