Sen. Rand Paul was “shocked and offended” by remarks made by Sen. Chuck Schumer and suggested President Donald Trump should sue the New York Democrat for defamation.

The Kentucky Republican slammed the Senate Minority Leader for comments made Tuesday at a press conference ahead of the final day of opening arguments by the president’s defense team in the impeachment trial.

Fox News host Ed Henry asked Paul about Schumer’s suggestion that Trump’s adult children may need to be investigated after claims about “friendly” relations with China in the forthcoming book by former national security adviser John Bolton.

“You know, I’m offended and shocked that Schumer would be so scurrilous as to accuse the president and his children of making money illegally off of politics when the only people we know have actually made money off of this have been Hunter Biden and Joe Biden,” the senator, who has indicated he could force a vote to have Hunter Biden testify, said Tuesday.

Schumer noted “concerns” about Trump’s dealings with “autocrats” such as Turkey’s President Erdoğan and China’s leader Xi Jinping.

“Did the president have financial interests at stake when he was talking to Erdoğan…Xi and others? Maybe his kids had some economic interests at stake,” the Democrats suggested. “And did it impact our nation’s foreign policy with those countries?”

“So Hunter Biden makes a million dollars a year, that’s documented,” Paul said on Fox News. “But Schumer simply creates and makes up and says, ‘Oh, maybe the president’s kids are making money.’ John Bolton is making money as we speak. He has probably already gotten the several million-dollar advance for this book. He’s making money by testifying against the president.”

“The only people we know that have actually made money? Hunter Biden and now John Bolton. And they’re not objective–John Bolton is not objective in any way, now that he’s cashing million-dollar checks,” he added, referring to Bolton’s book which, according to a New York Times report, accused the president of linking military aid to Ukraine to investigations of Biden.

“To have Schumer come up and say out of the blue, ‘Maybe the president’s kids are making money,’ with no evidence at all, that’s defamation and they ought to sue him,” Paul declared.

Henry noted the “anger” in the senator’s voice and wondered if bringing Trump’s children into the Democrat narrative was a “misstep” for Schumer.

“There is nothing in the record about the president’s kids,” Paul responded, noting that the record does show, however, that there was corruption in Ukraine.

“So Schumer just has created this whole thing out of whole cloth and said, ‘Oh, why don’t we go after the president’s kids?’ We don’t know yet whether or not the president’s dealings with the Chinese president have something to do with the Trumps making money.’ He just made it up! Completely made it up!” Paul exclaimed. “That’s defamation of character and he ought to go to court and be sued for it.”
