Trey Gowdy makes the case why Joe Biden is relevant as a potential witness, ‘so too is Obama’

Former Congressman Trey Gowdy made the case that Democrats’ handling of the impeachment process could make even former President Obama “relevant” as a trial witness.

The former South Carolina Republican and current Fox News contributor spoke with Sean Hannity Thursday about the latest on the impeachment trial of President Trump, slamming the overdramatic cries of Democratic impeachment managers claiming the president’s actions are unprecedented.

The “Hannity” segment kicked off with the Fox News host saying “congratulations” to former Vice President Joe Biden, whom he dubbed “Quid pro quo Joe,” on the “second anniversary” of his “admitting that he leveraged and shook down the country of Ukraine with a billion taxpayer dollars.”

“That certainly makes him relevant as a witness,” Gowdy responded.

“Part of impeachment is setting a precedent for what’s going to happen in the future,” he added. “So if the vice president can make that assertion, then he is relevant as a witness. But so too is President Obama because I would want to know whether or not he had the authority of the president at the time he made that pronouncement that there’ll be no loan guarantees unless the prosecutor is fired.”

Gowdy’s comments referred to comments made by Biden when he publicly recounted how he threatened to withhold U.S. funds for Ukraine if a prosecutor investigating the company his son worked for was not fired.

“Every time that clip plays of Joe Biden, I just think of more reasons that he is relevant as a witness if the Senate wants to go that route,” Gowdy said.

Hannity noted that this was a good point which “very few people” make, asking if Obama was “in on this shakedown” by Biden.

“Anytime you hear the word unprecedented, that makes me wonder does that mean no other president’s done it,” Gowdy said. “Adam Schiff loves to say this is an unprecedented abuse of power. Okay. Well, that makes what other presidents did relevant.”

“If President Obama gave Joe Biden permission to condition loan guarantees on the firing of a prosecutor, then that makes both of them potentially relevant as witnesses,” he contended.

Hannity brought up the constitutional basis for the Senate’s responsibility in the impeachment trial, reiterating his previous argument that it’s not the job of the senators to “undo the mess” Democrats created in the House when they voted to impeach the president.

“It’s the House’s job to investigate it,” Gowdy agreed, blasting the House Democrats for their rushed impeachment timeline.

“These investigations take a long time, this is about the removal of a duly elected chief executive. They wanted to do it in three months,” he added, arguing that calls for new witnesses by Democrats are “really about putting a handful of Republican senators in really tough re-elects.”
