Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will no longer be referred to as “their royal highnesses,” but will still be referred to as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex following official announcements from Queen Elizabeth and Buckingham Palace.
What has come to be called the “Megxit” plan by the couple will come to its culmination in the spring as they officially step back from their royal titles and “will no longer receive public funds for Royal duties,” according to the Palace.

“Following many months of conversations and more recent discussions, I am pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much-loved members of my family,” the Queen said in a statement released on Saturday, indicating that the couple’s intentions had been discussed for some time before their bombshell announcement earlier this month.

“I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life. I want to thank them for all their dedicated work across this country, the Commonwealth and beyond, and am particularly proud of how Meghan has so quickly become one of the family,” the monarch continued in the statement which came soon after a family meeting on the issue.
“It is my whole family’s hope that today’s agreement allows them to start building a happy and peaceful new life,” she added.

Buckingham Palace released a simultaneous statement on the official royal family website.
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are grateful to Her Majesty and the Royal Family for their ongoing support as they embark on the next chapter of their lives. As agreed in this new arrangement, they understand that they are required to step back from Royal duties, including official military appointments. They will no longer receive public funds for Royal duties,” the statement read.
“With The Queen’s blessing, the Sussexes will continue to maintain their private patronages and associations. While they can no longer formally represent The Queen, the Sussexes have made clear that everything they do will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty,” Buckingham Palace stated.
The analogies with Brexit have been over done, but this felt like a very Hard Exit from the Royal Family by Harry and Meghan. A severe break.

Markle, 38, and Harry, 35, will no longer be using royal titles but will keep the UK family home which they share with son Archie.
“The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shared their wish to repay Sovereign Grant expenditure for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, which will remain their UK family home,” the statement continued.
Frogmore Cottage will be #HarryandMeghan‘s official residence in the UK. But they pay back the cost of the refurbishment themselves. and they will pay the running costs and rent.

“Buckingham Palace does not comment on the details of security arrangements. There are well established independent processes to determine the need for publicly-funded security,” the Palace stated.

Harry’s involvement in the British Military is also affected by the move.

The couple had made comments on Instagram earlier this week ahead of the statements released Saturday.
“We have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” they shared. “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.”
British journalist Piers Morgan, who has been vocally critical of the couple’s decision, reacted to the statements on Twitter where he applauded Her Majesty.

Only surprised it took her so long to get Harry to ditch his family, the Monarchy, the military and his country. What a piece of work. pic.twitter.com/734AtrYsC9

Staggering that Harry would turn his back on the military like this. https://t.co/8YNVwVdpkg
