McConnell set to bypass Pelosi; informs Senate to prepare for trial, with or without articles of impeachment

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told Republicans that the impeachment trial will start next week — with or without the articles of impeachment that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has hijacked for the past 23 days.

McConnell (R-Ky) echoed the warnings of Senator Lindsey Graham, who earlier this week said Pelosi needs to put up or shut up.

Mitch made the announcement during a closed-door lunch Thursday as more Democrats pressure Pelosi to turn over the articles, calling her gambit a waste of time.

McConnell alerted Republicans that “they should not expect to be able to go home next weekend, indicating that the long-delayed trial will be underway,” three GOP senators told the Hill.

The Senate impeachment trial has been delayed because Nancy Pelosi — the leader of the flailing Democratic Party — has refused to hand over the articles, which the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives haphazardly slapped together on Dec. 18.

Once Pelosi sends the articles over, the Senate trial would begin the next day at 1 p.m. Eastern time. The Senate would then be in session six days a week until the trial ends.

In a speech on the Senate floor yesterday (Jan. 9), Mitch McConnell said the Senate “will move forward next week” because senators have “lost patience” with Pelosi bogarting the articles.

“[Democrats] do not get to trap our entire country into an unending Groundhog Day of impeachment without resolution,” McConnell said.

Senator McConnell continued:

“What have House Democrats actually done? They have initiated one of the most grave and most unsettling processes in our Constitution, and then refused to allow a resolution of it.

The Speaker began something that she herself predicted would be so divisive to the country, and now she is unilaterally saying it cannot move forward to resolution…They do not get to trap our entire country into an unending Groundhog Day of impeachment without resolution.

Alexander Hamilton specifically warned against a procrastinated resolution of impeachments. In part, that is because our duly elected president deserves a verdict, just like every American who is accused by their government deserves a speedy trial.

This goes deeper than fairness to one individual. This is about what is fair to the entire country. There’s a reason why the Framers did not contemplate a permanently unsettled presidency. That is true under any circumstances, but consider especially the circumstances of recent days.

Even as the Democrats have prolonged this game, we have seen Iran escalate tensions with our nation. We live in a dangerous world. So yes, the House majority can create this temporary cloud over a commander-in-chief if they choose. But they do not get to keep the cloud in place forever.

There is real business for the American people that the United States Senate needs to complete. If the Speaker continues to refuse to take her own accusations to trial, the Senate will move forward next week with the business of our people.

We will operate on the assumption that House Democrats are too embarrassed to ever move forward. And we will get back to the people’s business.”

Meanwhile, eight Democratic lawmakers are openly pressuring Pelosi to hand over the articles of impeachment.

Noted anti-Trumper Senator Richard Blumenthal said Pelosi needs to stop her shenanigans. “It’s appropriate to send them and pass the baton to senators,” he said.

Senator Joe Manchin agreed. “It’s time to turn the articles over,” Manchin said.

Congressman John Yarmuth (D-Ky) said: “There is a timeline. There’s a limit. The American people are going to want this to happen sooner rather than later.”

The GOP-controlled Senate is expected to acquit President Trump of the Democrats’ sham impeachment.

Senator Jon Tester summed it up best when he remarked: “I don’t know what leverage we [Democrats] have. It looks like the cake is already baked.”
