Thug who assaulted NYPD with water gets no jail time, just 10 days of community service

Courtney Thompson, the reputed gangster who assaulted New York City police officers last summer by throwing buckets of water at them, escaped jail time by accepting a sweetheart plea deal that requires him to do just 10 days of community service.

Cops in New York were furious, saying the slap on the wrist will only embolden escalating violence toward police.

“I can’t believe that guy got off!” a police source told the New York Post. “I mean, 10 days community service? Basically, you’re telling everybody that if you want to dump water on a cop, you can and there is no consequences for it. This is the lawless society that we live in now.”

Courtney Thompson, 28, scored the cushy deal after pleading guilty to a second-degree harassment charge last month.

Thompson, a reported member of a subset of the violent Crips street gang, was initially charged with third-degree criminal mischief, obstruction of governmental administration, criminal tampering, disorderly conduct, and harassment.

The third-degree criminal mischief charge is punishable by up to four years in jail. However, by pleading guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree harassment and agreeing to do 10 measly days of community service, Thompson will serve no jail time.

Thompson’s assault on the NYPD officers was immediately parroted by other hoodlums around New York City and across the country.

Many Americans blame the escalating, open violence toward cops on the Left’s anti-police rhetoric.

In a statement, the Police Benevolent Association of New York (PBA) blamed lawmakers who foment violence against cops by repeatedly demonizing and trashing law enforcement.

PBA president Patrick Lynch said, “Our anti-cop lawmakers have gotten their wish: the NYPD is now frozen…[The water attacks are] the end result of the torrent of bad policies and anti-police rhetoric. We are approaching the point of no return.”

Lynch added that “disorder controls the streets” and “elected leaders refuse to allow us to take them back. The politicians may not care about the dangerous levels of chaos in our neighborhoods, but police officers and decent New Yorkers should not be forced to suffer.”

The Left’s nonstop anti-police rhetoric has emboldened criminals and handcuffed cops’ ability to react properly, especially where minorities are involved.

Police are afraid of being falsely accused of racism and being fired, doxxed, and sued for “discrimination” simply for doing their jobs.

Lynch says NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio does not give the NYPD any support, which is why cops are afraid to do their jobs, like arrest criminals who assault them.

This is because de Blasio has repeatedly called law enforcement racist and because New York City has paid hefty settlements for alleged police abuse.

Lynch said the NYC cops “have nothing even remotely close to that kind of support from our city’s elected leaders.”

“Troopers may be patrolling city streets in increasing numbers, but they do not have to deal with a mayor who demonizes them for his own political gain, a City Council that imposes new burdens and second-guessing at every turn, or NYPD bosses who look to protect their own careers at the expense of the men and women they lead. It also doesn’t hurt that state troopers are paid about 30 percent more than NYPD cops.”

The NYPD and police officers around the country are in a no-win situation: If they react with appropriate force, they get smeared as racist or accused of “police brutality.” If they do nothing, hypocritical leftists call them wimps.

Then, there’s this: A “bail reform” bill that lets criminals back on the streets almost immediately after they’re arrested.
