Sen. Bernie Sanders appears to be set to continue his push for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.
The Vermont senator’s presidential campaign announced on Thursday he had beaten his Democratic rivals in the 4th quarter of 2019 fundraising totaling $34.5 million.

With more than 1.8 million donations in the last 3 months of 2019, the campaign also reportedly took in over $18 million from over 900,000 contributions in the month of December, with 40,000 on the final day of the year. The figures brought the total number of donations to the Sanders campaign to over 5 million, a point the 2020 hopeful was making in a final appeal to supporters on New Year’s Eve.

“Bernie Sanders is closing the year with the most donations of any candidate in history at this point in a presidential campaign,” Sanders campaign manager Faiz Shakir said. “He is proving each and every day that working-class Americans are ready and willing to fully fund a campaign that stands up for them and takes on the biggest corporations and the wealthy. You build a grassroots movement to beat Donald Trump and create a political revolution one $18 donation at a time, and that’s exactly why Bernie is going to win.”
Sanders touted the small-dollar and grassroots contributions to his campaign even as rival Julián Castro announced he is dropping out of the 2020 race.

After suffering a heart attack a few months ago, the 78-year-old has pulled ahead with endorsements from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and others. Former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg raised $24.7 million according to fourth-quarter totals, and businessman Andrew Yang raised $16.5 million while Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii has raised $3.4 million.
Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and former Vice President Joe Biden have not yet released their numbers but Sanders’ impressive totals pale in comparison to those released by President Donald Trump’s campaign on Thursday.

The president’s re-election campaign raised $46 million in the fourth quarter, which does not even include the yet-to-be-released totals from the Republican National Committee.

The president noted how the Democrats “have shot themselves in the foot” with the impeachment efforts against him, tweeting that his campaign raised millions in the days immediately following the “scam” vote in the House of Representatives last month.

Meanwhile, Fox Business Network contributor Charles Payne noted a “worrisome” fact about Sanders’ “impressive” fundraising.

Sanders and Warren, the two progressives in the 2020 presidential race, have criticized special interests and big corporations, vowing not to take donations from them. The Sanders campaign noted that the average donation was $18 and that, from 1.8 million individual donors, teachers were the most likely to give as well as employees of Starbucks, Amazon, and Walmart.
