Never Trumper Bill Kristol sparked a wave of mockery over an impeachment theory he shared on social media.
The founder of The Weekly Standard, the now-defunct political magazine, shared his fictional impeachment idea on Twitter wondering “what if” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is actually plotting to undermine President Trump while making it look like he is being “loyal” to him.
What if McConnell has privately signaled Murkowski et al that he’s fine with a little rebellion that would “force” him to accede to witnesses and a real trial, which could then accomplish McConnell’s true goal of getting rid of Trump while seeming to have been loyal to Trump?

Kristol wondered if McConnell’s “true goal” was being accomplished in allowing “a little rebellion,” citing Sen. Lisa Murkowski who made headlines last week for her comments about the potential Senate impeachment trial.
In an interview last week, the Alaska Republican criticized the rushed and flawed process undertaken in the House of Representatives which, in a nearly party-line vote, charged Trump with obstruction of Congress and abuse of power. But she admitted she was “disturbed” by McConnell’s promise to be “in total coordination” with the White House counsel’s office in the event there is a Senate trial on Trump’s impeachment.

Kristol’s theory about some secret plan between McConnell and Murkowski sparked comments from Republican political operative Cheri Jacobus who also put forth her idea about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi withholding articles of impeachment from the Senate.
But so far @realdonaldTrump has not been impeached for his indictable crimes. Once that happens, he can not be pardoned.
It’s probably why Pelosi is holding that over his head right now and talking about impeaching him for obstruction of justice as laid out in The Mueller Report.— Cheri Jacobus (@CheriJacobus) December 30, 2019
Jacobus, also a vocal Never Trumper, thought Kristol’s story line would validate her own which she put forth over a year ago.
It means I’ve been right for over a year since I first wrote this:

Others offered an even “darker” theory:
My conspiracy theory is darker than yours Bill, what if it lets McConnell ram through a vote that keeps Trump in place, but let’s them say he got a fair trial in the Senate, even though what he’ll offer is something carefully manufactured to keep too much truth from emerging?
— Joyce Alene (@JoyceWhiteVance) December 29, 2019
I thought this as well. Not this specifically, but that he wants the appearance of GOP cooperation, but then, public statements like “we have no choice but to have a trial” etc.
Remember, he was the one that encouraged trump to release the ‘transcript’.

And Jacobus continued to interject her thoughts in the Twitter thread.
nope — Mitch has his SCOTUS and judicial picks. He has 22 Senate seats to defend and will do what he needs to limit the bloodshed. Polls determine what happens. I wrote this just after the midterms and it still holds:
How This All Ends For Trump https://t.co/s89GXdni1Y— Cheri Jacobus (@CheriJacobus) December 29, 2019
When the state-by-state polls change, GOP Senators will start peeling away from Trump. When that means Trump on the ballot in 2020 hurts GOP Senate chances more than helping GOP Senate chances, Mitch and Murdoch will take care of it.
Truth is Trump’s enemy.

Apparently her TDS and repetitive touting of her own work got old for some Twitter users.
Yes. You said that a few times ?♂️

But Many on Twitter unloaded on Kristol for his far-fetched fiction.
It’s too early to be drinking Bill.

And if I picked the right numbers, I’d be a millionaire.
Guess what. The odds of me picking the right numbers are higher than the odds of what you’re proposing being the actual strategy Mitch is employing.— Christopher Wilson (@ChrisCtkwilson) December 30, 2019

Yeah, remember when you predicted some Republicans would vote for impeachment after voting against opening the inquiry…?
