CBS News’ Major Garrett offered praise of President Donald Trump’s efforts to help minority communities, calling the successful policies a “legacy” for the president and his administration.
The network’s chief White House correspondent named funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities as well as the passage of the First Step Act as examples of successful policies that were “undercovered” by the media and that point to the strides made by Trump in reaching black Americans and other minorities.

“So sometimes undercovered stories are complicated. And this one, I think, falls resolutely in that category,” Garrett said Sunday during CBS’s “Face the Nation.”
“The president’s relationship to people of color in this country — his rhetoric is indefensible, even by many Republicans,” Garrett continued, bringing up the false narrative about the president’s racism. “Charlottesville … is what people hear and think about when they think about the president and people of color.”
“And yet it can be fairly said that this administration, because of President Trump’s quiet prodding, has done quite a bit for funding of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the First Step Act, which was a massive first step toward criminal justice reform,” Garrett said.
“Just a couple weeks ago in this newly-signed defense bill there is a law that says if you are seeking work for the federal government or any contractor, you don’t have to be asked – and you can’t be asked – about your criminal history until right toward the end. That’s a significant change long sought by criminal justice advocates. Plus opportunities owned in the tax bill directed at communities of color,” he explained.
“That is a legacy, on the agenda side, that almost any president after three years, would want to claim, particularly President Obama,” Garrett declared.
“Quietly, persistently, President Trump has pushed Republicans in this direction. And I think that’s an under-covered story and part of something that neither he nor Republicans really talk about it, but it doesn’t make it any less real,” he added.
Trump’s other policies have also helped minority communities and Americans in general. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in 2017 saw a major overhaul of the US tax code which helped put more money in the pockets of American families. Black and Hispanic unemployment rates fell to an all-tine low under Trump’s administration.

Garrett’s honest assessment won him praise on Twitter where many social media users set the record straight on Trump’s legacy in this area.
