Sen. Bernie Sanders is suddenly starting to look good to Democrat insiders.
The Vermont senator and 2020 presidential hopeful has recently gotten the attention of Democratic operatives and pundits as his candidacy is being taken more seriously.
“It may have been inevitable that eventually, you would have two candidates representing each side of the ideological divide in the party,” longtime Hillary Clinton ally David Brock told Politico.
“A lot of smart people I’ve talked to lately think there’s a very good chance those two end up being Biden and Sanders,” Brock added. “They’ve both proven to be very resilient.”
“I believe people should take him very seriously. He has a very good shot of winning Iowa, a very good shot of winning New Hampshire, and other than Joe Biden, the best shot of winning Nevada,” Dan Pfeiffer, once an adviser to former President Barack Obama, said. “He could build a real head of steam heading into South Carolina and Super Tuesday.”

Democratic insiders said they are rethinking Sanders’ bid for a few reasons: First, Warren has recently fallen in national and early state surveys. Second, Sanders has withstood the ups and downs of the primary, including a heart attack. At the same time, other candidates with once-high expectations, such as Kamala Harris, Cory Booker and Beto O’Rourke, have dropped out or languished in single digits in the polls.
Sanders has been “more resilient than I anticipated,” California state Sen. Scott Wiener said.
“But in retrospect, he has a very, very loyal following, and people have really stuck with him,” the Democrat who defeated a Sanders-backed candidate in 2016, added.
The latest CNN poll showed Sanders has the highest net favorability rating of any Democratic 2020 candidate and the most recent RealClearPolitics average showed the senator nearly 9 percentage points behind former Vice President Joe Biden.
Brock mentioned that he has not recently heard about establishment Democrats talking about how to slow Sanders’ momentum, something that was a point of discussion earlier this year before Sen. Elizabeth Warren surged in polls for a while.
“That doesn’t mean it won’t happen. This is more of an analysis in the political world than in the donor world,” he told Politico.
Liberal filmmaker Michael Moore thinks Sanders can beat President Trump because voters perceive him as “the real deal.”
“He’s outside the box the way Trump was,” he told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews on “Hardball.”

The activist and frequent Trump critic thinks “the weakness of the president” could give Sanders a 2020 victory.
“Democratic voters like him, and if he starts winning, there could be a bandwagon effect,” national political correspondent Steve Kornacki told MSNBC following last week’s Democratic debate.
Sanders’ campaign manager, Faiz Shakir, believes political insider will find it “harder and harder to ignore him when he’s rising in every average that you see.”
Attorney General of Minnesota and former deputy chairman of the Democratic National Committee Keith Ellison tweeted: “Lace up your sneakers and get ready for President @BernieSanders.”

But, while Democratic insiders may be rethinking a Sanders candidacy, many on Twitter were less than thrilled with the idea.
