Sen. Ted Cruz called out House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for withholding the articles of impeachment from the Senate, calling her move a “sign of weakness.”

The Texas Republican knocked Democrats’ impeachment efforts against President Donald Trump as “an admission of failure” as he criticized Pelosi’s decision to delay sending the House-approved articles of impeachment to the Senate as expected.

“I think this is a sign of weakness,” Cruz said on “Sunday Morning Futures.

“This is a sign she understands just how weak these Articles are,” he said of Pelosi, who has not yet sent the articles to the Senate for a trial following last week’s vote by the House to charge Trump with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

“These articles of impeachment that they actually voted on were really an admission of failure,” Cruz told Fox News host Maria Bartiromo. “For months, they had been promising all of this evidence of criminal activity. For months they had been talking about bribery, they had been talking about quid pro quo. But then they heard all the evidence and they got no evidence of it.”

Cruz argued that the articles “don’t allege any crime.”

“This is the first time in the history of our country that a president has been impeached without a single article alleging any criminal conduct. They don’t allege any crime. They don’t even allege any federal law violated,” he said. “This was, at the end of the day, a political response because Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats hate the president.”

Pelosi declared last week that she was waiting for assurances that the Senate would conduct a fair trial, criticizing Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for saying he would work in “total coordination” with the White House.

“This is what I don’t consider a fair trial — that Leader McConnell has stated that he’s not an impartial juror, that he’s going to take his cues, in quotes, from the White House, and he’s working in ‘total coordination’ with the White House counsel’s office,” Pelosi said after the House vote.

Harvard Law Professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz slammed the California Democrat for her decision last week, saying he couldn’t imagine “anything more unconstitutional.”

“An impeached president has a right to be tried and acquitted by the Senate,” Dershowitz told Newsmax.

“Denying him and the American people that fundamental right might serve the temporary interests of the Democratic Party, and academics who support it,” he added, “but would do violence to the rule of constitutional law that is supposed to serve all Americans, regardless of party or ideology.”

McConnell mocked Democrats last week for their “buyer’s remorse about the least fair, least thorough, and most rushed impeachment in American history.”

Cruz mocked the Democrats for apparently shooting themselves in the foot with their ill-conceived plan to hold the articles from the Senate.

“This is a purely partisan vote, only Democrats supported this, that’s never happened before either,” Cruz the Fox News Rundown podcast.

“In the Senate, we’re actually doing our job, we are voting, passing legislation, we’re confirming judges, we’re confirming members of the administration. It’s the House, the House Democrats, that refuse to do their job. Their only priority is attacking the president,” he said. “And I think the voters are frustrated that House Democrats seem to think hating Donald Trump is the reason they were elected.”
