Brit Hume: Nancy Pelosi probably senses impeachment will have ‘shortest half-life’ because no one cares

Fox News political analyst Brit Hume — who has covered Washington for 46 years and reported on past presidential impeachments — predicts that the Democrats’ sham, drive-by impeachment will be forgotten soon. And that’s exactly how Speaker Nancy Pelosi wants it.

“Of all the impeachments that we have had, this one will have the shortest half-life,” Hume told Fox News host Tucker Carlson. “On some level, Nancy Pelosi may have sensed this all along. And that’s why she was in such a hurry.”

Hume said that Pelosi — who vehemently opposed impeachment a few months ago — was pressured into a sloppy, slipshod impeachment by the vocal, radical left faction in her party.

Hume, a frequent Trump critic, explained:  “She wanted to get it over with so that the voters who were offended by this [sham impeachment] will have a chance to forget it. And she and her party will have kept faith with the base that’s so rabid against Trump. And they can move on from there.”

The impeachment vote came down along party lines. In fact, Democrats had two defectors who voted against the “abuse of power” article and three Democrats who voted against “obstruction of Congress.”

In contrast, all Republicans voted lock-step against impeachment. Remember that Democrats had promised a bipartisan vote in favor of impeachment; that didn’t happen. In fact, the only bipartisan vote was AGAINST impeachment.

Brit Hume, who has covered the impeachments of Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton, said he was stunned by how apathetic most Americans were toward this impeachment. Why? Because Democrats overpromised and underdelivered.

Hume said the Democrats’ rhetoric about how President Trump committed all these crimes did not match the facts.

“The striking thing to me is how little interest people are showing in this. The polls reflect that. I was up in the woods in Pennsylvania this week for Christmas. I had lunch today with some guys who live up here. They’re smart guys, successful guys. They’re interested in politics.

And there was almost no discussion of this — this on the very day that the vote was gonna be held. And I think it’s because it hasn’t moved people and captured people’s imagination.”

Hume explained that the “crimes” the Democrats accused President Trump of were not even impeachable offenses.

“We’re talking about the temporary withholding of aid [to Ukraine] that was ultimately provided in exchange for an investigation that wasn’t conducted. And while it was improper for the president to raise Joe Biden’s name in that now-famous conversation, it really didn’t go anywhere.”

Moreover, Hume pointed out that President Trump has provided more military and financial aid to Ukraine than Barack Obama ever did.

“We were hearing today about how our national security was compromised. Really? How exactly? This administration’s policy toward Ukraine was stronger than the previous administration’s. Which leaves you to wonder, how exactly was our ‘national security compromised’?”

Hume said that while Trump obviously is not happy with the sham impeachment, it won’t damage him in the long run because his supporters will rally around him even more fiercely and he’ll get easily reelected.
