The Washington Post was buried in an avalanche of backlash for a petty attack on Melania Trump and her “ridiculous” jacket.
The newspaper’s fashion critic Robin Givhan targeted the first lady in a derogatory piece entitled, “Melania Trump’s Christmas decorations are lovely, but that coat looks ridiculous,” and was instantly torched on social media.

The liberal Jeff Bezos-owned publication gave a miserly nod to this year’s “lovely” holiday decorations unveiled by Mrs. Trump.

But the “The Spirit of America” inspired theme at the White House was quickly dismissed by Givhan who focused the rest of her piece on trashing the first lady.
“For her tour, Mrs. Trump wears all white: a dress with a simple jewel neckline, white stiletto-heeled pumps and a white coat. The coat is draped over her shoulders as she strolls through the White House,” Givhan wrote. “The coat looks ridiculous.”
She declared that “the coat is a distraction” and “a discomforting affectation taken to a ludicrous extreme.”
Claiming the first lady appears like someone who greets “guests at the front door, tells them to remove their shoes and warns them not to sit on the Lalanne sheep,” and not an “engaged hostess who sweats the details and frets about her guests’ comfort.”
“In a video that is intended to celebrate the warmth and welcoming spirit of the holiday season, that simple flourish exudes cold, dismissive aloofness,” Givhan wrote. “Her attire suggests that she’s casually passing through and has little affinity for the occasion. She’s not getting comfortable, so why should you?”
“Her attire would be less attention-grabbing if she took off her coat and indicated that she was happy to stay awhile,” she added.
White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham was among the many who blasted The Post and its so-called fashion critic.
“It has become an annual holiday tradition for the media to attack all that the First Lady does,” Grisham said in a statement to Fox News. “If this was a Democratic Administration, I suspect Mrs. Trump and her work would be featured positively in every mainstream news outlet.”
No telling how WaPo’s fashion critic will react to Mrs. Trump’s attire in London Tuesday as she arrived at Buckingham Palace wearing a yellow cape dress from Valentino.

The former model wore a long-sleeved violet dress underneath along with suede Christian Louboutin stilettos in a matching shade.

The Trumps, who are in London as the president attended a NATO summit, joined Prince Charles and his wife the Duchess of Cornwall at a reception hosted by Queen Elizabeth II commemorating the 70th anniversary NATO.

Scathing rebukes were unloaded at the Washington Post on Twitter where the news outlet’s tweet promoting the story on the first lady received over 7,000 comments and less than 1,000 likes as of this writing.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio slammed the “deranged criticism” on Twitter.
Even the @WhiteHouse Christmas decorations triggers deranged criticism.
Does anyone in the world of major media have enough self awareness to realize the damage their hatred of @realdonaldtrump is inflicting on them & journalism? pic.twitter.com/GRzmwUtoDo

Countless others also eviscerated the news outlet.
Fashion criticism is great but Washington Post’s fashion critic is almost always just “liberal politicians look amazing and conservative politicians look awful” but even for her, this is a transparently and laughably petty take. pic.twitter.com/Dqpd5XmPdv

This article is ridiculous. And disrespectful.

What’s this, the 3rd, 4th WaPo article attacking Melania and her Christmas decorations? What a petty and sad outfit WaPo has become.
