Wallace grills Dem Rep on wavering impeachment push: Clear no bipartisan support like Pelosi claimed

Fox News host Chris Wallace called out a top House Democrat over the impeachment inquiry, telling him the public “isn’t buying” claims of bipartisan support for removing President Donald Trump from office.

Pointing to declining support for impeachment in recent national polls, Wallace grilled Rep. Hakeem Jeffries about Democrat efforts during an interview on “Fox News Sunday.”

“We do have a constitutional responsibility to serve as a check and balance on a potentially out-of-control executive branch,” Jeffries said.

“The founders didn’t want a king, they didn’t want a dictator, they didn’t want a monarch, they wanted a democracy so we have a responsibility to defend our democracy,” the New York Democrat added.

“We are here at this moment right now because the president decided to pressure foreign government to target an American citizen for political gain and at the same time withhold $391 million in military aid from a very vulnerable Ukraine which is [an] ally to the United States and is still at war with Russian-backed separatists in Crimea,” he told Wallace. “That is why we’re at this moment.”

“But congressman,” the Fox News host countered, “Democrats have been making that case — you’ve been making your best case to the public for two months now.”

“You just finished 30 hours of televised hearings, 12 witnesses, and the public apparently isn’t buying it at this point,” Wallace added. “It’s clear that there is none of the bipartisan support that Speaker Pelosi said for months was essential to impeachment.”

The New York lawmaker pushed back, invoking the Constitution and claiming Democrats are presenting Americans with the “truth.”

“Our job is to follow the facts, apply the law, be guided by the U.S. Constitution and present the truth to the American people no matter where it leads because no one is above the law. That’s what we have been doing, that’s what we are doing,” Jeffries replied after citing a poll that reportedly found about 50 percent of Americans support impeaching Trump.

The president fired up a rally crowd in Florida as he sparked boos and then chants of “bulls***!” after he called out the impeachment “witch hunt” being conducted against him by Democrats.

Opposition to impeachment rose from 43.8 percent to 45.6 percent, according to the FiveThirtyEight average of national polls which also showed that support for the effort by Democrats dropped to 46.3 percent from 50.3 percent in mid-October. Only 41 percent of independents in the FiveThirtyEight average now support impeachment, a significant drop from the 47.7 percent in late October.

A Hill-HarrisX poll released last week showed that even Democrats have begun to lose interest as the poll, taken just after the first public hearings, indicated that the number of Democrats who said they were following the impeachment inquiry fell 5 percentage points to 73 percent.

Jeffries’ defense of impeachment, despite a lack of bipartisan support, earned him a tongue-lashing on social media as Twitter users blasted him, and even Wallace for good measure.
