A majority of Republicans believe Donald Trump is a better president than Abraham Lincoln was, according to a new poll compiled by YouGov and The Economist.

poll of 1,500 adult U.S. citizens say 53% say Trump is a better president than Lincoln, while 47% said Lincoln was the better president.

Abraham Lincoln was the Republican president from 1861 to 1865 who ended slavery and shepherded the United States through a bloody, four-year Civil War.

Lincoln was assassinated in 1865 by actor John Wilkes Booth, a leftist who — like the Democratic Party of that time — supported slavery.

Not surprisingly, 94% of Democrats said Lincoln was better, while 78% of Independents favored Lincoln over President Trump.

If the poll results are to be believed, they suggest that today’s Republican Party is firmly behind Trump, notwithstanding the repeated attacks he gets from Never-Trumpers like Ana Navarro and George Conway.

Poll: Impeachment stunt is a disaster for Democrats

The latest YouGov poll also indicates that the Democrats’ impeachment hearings are failing to win an audience — especially among Independent voters, whom the Democrats are targeting to vote Trump out of office.

According to the poll, only 19% of Independents say they are “very interested” in watching the impeachment hearings on TV. Meanwhile, 46% of Independents say they are “not interested at all” in the hearings.

This is significant because the point of the Democrats’ impeachment inquiry is to convince Independent voters to turn on President Trump. However, the spectacle appears to be backfiring.

Impeachment hearings interest

On a related note, only 38% of Independents believe President Trump should be removed from office in the likelihood that the Democrat-led House of Representatives votes to impeach him.

In contrast, 40% believe Trump should not be removed, while 22% are unsure.

These shaky results show that the impeachment inquiry has been a PR disaster for the Democratic Party, since Republicans are overwhelmingly lock-step against impeachment.

More black voters oppose impeachment than support it

Fox News host Tucker Carlson remarked that the Democrats’ attempt to destroy Trump through their sham impeachment has boomeranged on them.

“Instead of destroying Trump, impeachment appears to have made him even stronger, like Godzilla,” Carlson said. “It turns out that parading bureaucrats before the cameras to demand that you sent money to Ukraine — shut up, no questions allowed — isn’t very effective as a campaign strategy. And as a result, support for impeachment has fallen even among core Democratic voters.”

Carlson continued: “Here’s the latest example: An Emerson poll released last week found that among African-American voters, just 37% now support impeachment. 38% are opposed, while 25% were uncertain, which itself is significant.”

“In the same poll, among white voters, 44% support impeachment. That’s not among white Democrats — that’s among all white voters,” he added.

Tucker continued: “So, think about that for a second. That means African-Americans — though they remain the most loyal Democratic constituency — tend to be more skeptical of impeachment. In other words, in the Democratic party, it is white liberals who are howling for impeachment. The rest of the party? Not so much.”

Carlson said these developments undoubtedly have the Democratic Party running scared.

“That’s interesting and unexpected — and it has Democratic leaders squirming,” Tucker said. “They promised their base impeachment. The press told them it was a sure thing. It’s hard to back off from that, but going forward it could devastate the party next fall.”

Carlson continued: “New polls from Rasmussen and Emerson both show the president’s approval rating rising. If Donald Trump could get even half the figure among black voters that he’s getting now in those polls, he will win reelection.”
